The internet of things (IoT) comes with security risks for the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) networks, which are always dynamically and unpredictably changing. Towards this, the SANCUS project aims to design a ground-breaking paradigm of a systematic and all-inclusive solution of true network protection. SANCUS will introduce six automated firmware and software code-review engines with improved accuracy and searching speed. The engines are integrated over a unified security orchestration platform and offered as a docker-based function extensions in typical 5G management and orchestration (MANO) architecture. Innovative mechanisms and methods will visualise the risk dynamics of individual network unit and recommend the optimal security-vs-privacy-vs-reliability efficiency solution.
Towards this, WP2 took on the task of requirements investigation and the design of the detailed SANCUS architecture. During the past year, SANCUS’ partners engaged in a discussion for the requirements and specifications for the SANCUS components.  SANCUS' architecture was finalised at the end of the first year, and all the information collected was passed on to the technical implementation work packages.

In the past period,2 plenary meetings took place, hosted by the project coordinator, Dr Hicham Khalife from Thales, to review the project’s progress, and outline the roadmap ahead. All 15 partners joined remotely via teleconference due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Meet our partners

IANUS Consulting Ltd is a SME that conducts research in the security domain, develops innovative solutions, and provides consultancy and management services to its clients in both the public and the private sector. In the ‘Sancus Project’, Ianus is primarily active in WP1, WP2, WP6 and in any other activity that it can contribute to.
 In WP1 the Data management Plans (DMPs) is introduced focusing on the key elements that make a successful (DMPs), in an attempt to raise awareness regarding what happens to the personal data handled, how it is backed up or for how long it could be retained. This initial DMP for the SANCUS project deals primarily with the question of how personal data should be processed and/or generated in the process of the project. The versions of the DMPs will be updated in M6, M12, M18 and M26. Moreover, Project rules for ethical issues and data handling are identified in this work package, as well as ethical issues, issues about protection of personal data and issues about informed consent procedures.
In WP2 Ianus contributes to the Identification and classification of recent security concerns in the OEM supply chain. The core activity of this task deals with the identification of potential risks and security concerns from the code level, link layer (firmware) level, and service level. Interdependences will then be introduced with emphasis on potential code and firmware vulnerabilities. The identified security concerns will be listed and classified qualitatively in terms of high-level network performance measures related to security, reliability, and efficiency (system and network service performance). The findings will feed the initial activities and development targets in WP3 and WP4.
In WP6 Ianus will lead the Planning of demonstration and validation scenarios. The main objective of this task is the development of a detailed plan for the project’s demonstrations, incorporating the required preparation procedures for the use cases validation. Different scenarios will be defined to evaluate and validate SANCUS solutions. The performance of SANCUS and its added value will be demonstrated in the project’s pilots, assuring the final product of the project. Moreover, Ianus will contribute to the Demonstration and evaluation of SANCUS outcomes. The outcomes of the SANCUS demonstration and evaluation will be analyzed and they will be reported to allow a further performance characterization.
In relation to communication and dissemination activities Dr Georgios Kioumourtzis, the founder of Ianus Consulting, presented the “SANCUS” project at ‘The 3rd Annual Forum of CERIDES – Excellence in Innovation & Technology, in which the overview of the Project provided the project problem statement, approach, key concepts, innovations, and finally a high-level architecture was presented.
IANUS is also an active member of the European Cyber Security Organisation (ECSO) and participates in active Working Groups. We are planning to communicate and disseminate SANCUS results within the ECSO community.
