Heaven-on-Earth Report

October to December 2019

Dear Heaven-on-Earth friends and supporters
2019 Is fast speeding to an end and what a year we’ve had as a program! So many new children and schools joined us this year and this was only possible with and through the wonderful support from each of you!
Allow me to say a special word of thanks to Somerset West Rotary Club, the Helderberg Clubs, as well as Rotary Club Munich 100, who have phenomenally blessed us the past 15 months and allowed us to expand the program to many more children and schools.  We also thank Lebenslinien e.v. for their huge financial contribution to the program, as well as via Rotary.
In addition, we have so many sponsors and friends who continued to contribute on a monthly and annual basis via monetary and other means.  There are too many to list, but please know that we appreciate each and everyone of you as very special partners of the Heaven-on-Earth program.
We look forward to so many new developments and additions in 2020 and we invite you to continue the walk with us to assist to change South Africa: one child at a time.  Please also encourage your friends and other educators to join our YouTube video channel early in 2020 as we spread our wings further to reach those outside our immediate boundaries.... we are truly excited to go digital!
I wish each and everyone of you a blessed Christmas.  May the birth of Jesus and His love touch you and your families in a very special way!  May His peace fill you and may 2020 be a wonderful,  blessed year!!
Campher Serfontein (Project Manager)
The HOEP-tree!
Above, left: HOEP was privileged to make a difference to 1770 grade RR and grade R learners in 31 Western Cape schools and crèches this year. 56 Educators were trained to present our intervention program and thereby became empowered to put the young learners in their care, in the starting blocks for successful school careers.
Above right: We are excited to start 2020 with 1910 learners in 48 schools and with 87 educators who will receive weekly training to present the program in their classes. Soli deo Gloria!
Measurement of results
HOEP had independent, professional measurements done this term. Three crèches who implemented the program for a year or longer were randomly chosen, as well as three crèches, from the same areas, on our waiting list (crèches which had no exposure to the intervention program as yet). The Grade R Learning barrier screening battery was used and the results, as reflected in the graph below, is a wonderful confirmation that the Heaven-on-Earth Remedial intervention program contributes to making a huge difference regarding the school readiness of learners:
Crèches A, B and C:
School readiness percentage of 3 crèches which implemented and followed the intervention program in 2019 (36 sessions of 2 non-consecutive hours each).
Crèches X, Y and Z:
School readiness percentage of 3 crèches which has NOT yet implemented and followed the HOEP intervention program. These 3 crèches will be starting with the program in January 2020.
17 Different perceptual skills were measured by means of this test. The results of every crèche’s average achievement regarding every measured skill, were also made available to us. This makes it possible to identify areas where learners still experience back logs and it enables us to bring even a better program to the 2020 learners!
Thank you very much, Lynette and Karen, for this extremely big task which you’ve started and completed with so much love and enthusiasm!
Join us for a walk through the many delights of Term 4!

HOEP-workbooks bring joy!
Above: The sparkles in the little eyes tell a story of its own when the children receive their HOEP remedial workbooks at the beginning of each term! Thank you to every sponsor for your contribution to make this possible.
Middle: Diverso is much, much more to HOEP than just the company printing our workbooks so beautifully every term. The extra miles they go by delivering the books and by sending Diverso-men to carry the heavy boxes to the office, touches us deeply. Making a copying machine available for our use helps us tremendously. Planting 20 trees at Firgrove Primary during the term shows their heart! Thank you for your amazing care!
Learning = Fun!!
Above: What we learn with pleasure, we never forget!! It was lovely seeing how the young learners enjoy the HOEP-intervention sessions on concrete, semi-concrete and abstract levels during the term.
Sharing ideas and knowledge!
Above: We are thankful to see how educators start getting excited about education again! This was one of the experiences that surely stood out during our training sessions this term. To be involved in so many schools opens a treasure chest of ideas!! One educator’s idea often stimulates many more ideas on how to make your own resources (e.g: the rugby ball threading activity above) and on how to prepare outstanding theme tables.
Above, middle: The theme “habitats” for example, does not only need to display habitats above the earth’s surface. This teacher went a step further and showed the learners how animals such as moles and rabbits also live in underground tunnels.
A peek from outside
Above, left: Louise Theron (CEO, Helderberg Outreach) attends a training session in Franschhoek and experiences first hand why we get so excited about the interaction between the different teachers!  Thank you Helderberg Outreach, for your huge contributions and for joining us on our journey for so many years already.
Middle: Esdré Keller, Somerset West Rotary Club’s contact person with the HOEP program, during a training session at Wendy’s Playschool. Thank you, Dave Hawes, Peter Blaine, Esdré Keller, Eppie McFarlane  and other members of the club, for your fantastic support!
Above, right: Daniel and Elena Gerlich during a visit to our centre in Sir Lowry’s Pass. The children were thrilled receiving beautiful puzzles from this German couple.
Above: Dr. Daniela Späth from Rotary Club Munich 100, with Janetta Brinkhuis, principal of Sunshine Kids Crèche, during a visit to our project. Rotary Club Munich 100, in collaboration with Somerset West Rotary Club, currently carry the cost of 1200 learners on the program. Your support is tremendous!
Above, right: Ton Kalkers from the Netherlands is busy determining how the classrooms of our centre could be enlarged. He agreed to financing this building project. Thank You,Ton!!
Pass on the love!!
Above: The Toyota Knights are not only excellent salespeople within the dealer salesforce, they are also those who make a meaningful contribution to the community. They came together once again this term to bless each of the 120 learners following the program at our centre in Sir Lowry’s Pass, with a very special Christmas present. Thank you for the love you’ve spread in abundance!
Below, left: Behind the scenes!!  Our little stars, Ava Oppelt and Bailey Titus show on video exactly what we have in mind with every activity. Thank you, Réni Jansen van Rensburg for the terrific video recordings and for the countless hours of editing.
Resources used for the recordings is made from easily obtainable items by the HOEP-team.
Below, right: A simple data mat made from plastic and leaves and an egg tray used as sorting board.
We will soon be sending you an introductory video and a YouTube link!! Please share these with as many parents and educators as possible. Together we can make a difference!!
New horizons!
Locally we are so much looking forward to welcome new schools and crèches from as close as Macassar, as distant as Thandi’s Educare in the Grabouw mountains and even as far as Botrivier. All of them are so welcome as part of the HOEP-family!
We aim at marketing our project during 2020 in order to ensure enough funding for our 2021-learners. Below: HOEP-team members presenting our program at various occasions.
The theme for the week was “wild animals” and the class were asked to draw pictures of any wild animal. This youngster immediately announced that he was going to draw the lion from his “lion book”(Grade R  Workbook). The teachers were stunned when they saw the caption next to his drawing: God gives me strength. Habakkuk. He tried writing the bible verse from his workbook! The seed is planted… the Holy Spirit will water it and let it grow…
