11 students win awards from Fashion Scholarship Fund


VCUarts students from the Department of Fashion Design + Merchandising netted 11 wins in the annual Fashion Scholarship Fund case study competition, and, for the first time, two VCUarts students ranked among the top eight. VCU also had the second-highest number of winners overall. The students were recognized in January at a star-studded gala in New York City; along with the scholarship awards, students are eligible for a mentor program.

Alum recognized with prestigious awards

Painting + Printmaking alumna Torkwase Dyson (BFA ’99) recently received a $25,000 award from Anonymous Was a Woman, and a $50,000 Joyce Alexander Wein Artist Prize from the Studio Museum in Harlem.

Craft project will keep you warm

Students in the Introduction to Textiles class, taught by craft and material studies assistant professor Hillary Fayle (MFA ’15), made quilts that were exhibited at the Anderson before being donated to the VCU Massey Cancer Center.

Coding Beats

Coding Beats: Learning Computer Programming by Coding Hip Hop Beats is a new public school-focused curriculum designed by faculty members from VCU’s departments of Kinetic Imaging, Music and Computer Science, along with Richmond hip-hop artist Nickelus F.

The student-focused publication Intelligent.com named the VCUarts undergraduate photography program the Best Bachelor’s Degree in its Top 24 Photography Degrees for 2020.
