VCU commemorates fine arts building in honor of former Dean Murry N. DePillars

On Sept. 30, 2021, the university held a commemoration ceremony to honor the legacy of former Dean Murry N. DePillars, Ph.D., and celebrate the naming of the fine arts building at 1000 W. Broad St.

The event highlighted DePillars’ role in growing the size and reputation of the School of the Arts during his nearly 20-year tenure as dean, and represents an ongoing commitment to recognize his contributions as an artist, art historian and educator.

Nov. 9 Faculty Lecture Series: Honoring the Feminine

Attend a screening of the short film AFRI, by Moroccan American screenwriter and director Yossera Bouchtia (B.A.’11/A; B.S.’11/H&S), assistant professor of cinema at VCUarts, followed by an audience Q&A session. The film, which has been screened at international film festivals, follows a sister’s search for her ostracized brother after a rare natural occurrence overtakes a mythical desert village. Oct. 19 Wavelength: Elegance Bratton + Chester Algernal Gordon 
Hear from Elegance Bratton and Chester Algernal Gordon, who collaborated on the documentary Pier Kids, directed by Bratton and produced by Gordon. The feature has been praised for its raw and truthful portrayal of survival through the eyes of three young LGBTQ+ people of color in New York City. Wavelength is a collaborative online lecture series of VCUarts, ICA, and VCUarts Qatar that invites a dynamic group of artists, designers, curators and scholars to share their work. Announcing new 2021 faculty promotions and tenure

VCUarts Theatre: Men on Boats, Nov. 11 - 14

VCUarts Theatre presents Men on Boats, a gender-expansive reimagination of the 1869 expedition of the Green and Colorado rivers to the Grand Canyon as documented by John Wesley Powell. This production marks the department’s return to Raymond Hodges Theatre since the pandemic closed theatres worldwide in spring of 2020.
