Welcome back Explorers and a special Hello to our newest Discovery students and parents! Thank you to those who stopped by the PTSA table at our Meet the Teacher event.

What is PTSA? The Parent Teacher Student Association meets once a month to discuss and plan how they can help provide support for the Discovery faculty and students. It is also a forum for parents to obtain knowledge and voice their opinions about what is happening in their school. Through membership and fundraisers they help with teacher grants, finances the angel fund, plan teacher/staff hospitality events and campus dances, help with school beautification and spirit events, creates the Discovery yearbook and many more exciting things happening around Discovery. Last year the PTSA raised enough money to purchase a new filtered water bottle station, purchase a word wall for the front office, and brighten the elective hallways with murals. They helped gift teachers grants, celebrated the holidays and teacher appreciation week, and worked with SAC for campus beautification days. The PTSA also helped in the planning of the first Valentines day dance. None of this would be possible without the help and support of Discovery parents and administration. If you did not get a chance to purchase your PTSA membership there is still time. Membership fee is only $10. Please email for more information.
We hope to see you at our first monthly PTSA Meeting & Coffee Talk on Tuesday, September 3 at 8:45am in room B115. We look forward to discussing another great year at Discovery. All are welcome to attend!
If you have any questions for the PTSA, please email us at Your 2019-2020 PTSA Board  members are Tricia Carpenter- President, Ann Cruz- Vice President, Diane Campbell- 2nd Vice President, Rebecca Johnson- treasurer, and Marie Mahserdijian- secretary.
Our custom DMS laptop sleeves, tags and decals are still available for purchase. Cost is $12 for sleeve, $3 for the tag and $2 for the decal. All three items together are only $15. Please email to find out how to purchase these items.
Yearbooks can be purchased by going to and using code 3840020 or you can order with the form that was sent home this week with students. Our 76-page hardcover full-color yearbook is a great way to remember the school year. The yearbook committee will need help with pictures; if you have a student in music, theater, sports team, or in clubs, we especially need your pictures. You can email pictures to for consideration.
The School Advisory Council is a representative body of teachers, students, parents, support personnel, and community members who assist with writing and monitoring the School Improvement Plan (SIP) and decide how school improvement funds will be spent. The SAC helps the school achieve its goals and increase student learning through the School Improvement process. As a member of SAC, you play an important part in representing our school community and are the voices in helping to better our school performance. We are the liaison for information and communication among students, families and staff at Discovery Middle School. We strive to engage families in the education process by:
  • being a source of information and SUPPORT to parents
  • WELCOMING new families
  • provide a forum to discuss IDEAS and CONCERNS
We value your input and welcome you to join our team. If you are interested, we encourage you to attend our first meeting on Tuesday, August 27

Thank you students and parents for such a great first week back to school. I would like to take a moment to address some safety reminders as we being the school year.

When visiting the campus, please enter through the West Gate from Woodbury Road. If you need to park, there are spaces available. There should be no unattended vehicles in the drop-off/pick-up loop. No parents should be driving in through the North Gate from Lake Underhill. The West Gate is a private entrance for staff and buses, it is not for public use and does not have an assigned crossing guard. Please adhere to the signs posted.

We have recently observed parents pulling slightly into driveways, onto curbs, or even just stopping on major roads to pick up or drop off children. Parking or stopping on a public roadway, on a crosswalk, or in the intersections, for the purposes of loading or unloading passengers is a violation of law. This may lead to increased traffic, crashes, and danger to students leaving or approaching a roadway. Please help us keep your kids safe by avoiding such action.

Students walking or biking to and from school should stay on the sidewalks and use the crosswalks to get home. Cutting across the roadways at areas other than designated crossings is dangerous, and also a violation of law. And, if biking and under 17 years old, you must be wearing a helmet. This is safety issue, but failing to follow this rule is also a violation of law.

I am providing this information because we want students and parents to observe rules and laws when on or around the campus. Please take a moment to review these points with your children so that we can reduce the risks. If anyone has any questions or would like additional information on these points, please contact the office and I will be happy to meet to discuss.

The Partners in Education program links businesses and organizations with schools in relationships that enhance student learning and promote school improvement. In a partnership, a business adopts a school, or schools, and shares its human and material resources.

Education and business are so closely related that each flourishes from the support and prosperity of the other. Schools must prepare today's students for their entry into a diverse, competitive workforce. When businesses take part in the education of these young people, they help strengthen the workforce of the future. The Partners in Education program is vital in helping the community and the school system work and grow together.
