OPENING NIGHT OF "BARE" IS HERE

After five fast weeks of preparation, Whitman’s theater department is prepared for Thursday’s opening night of the musical “bare.” Written in 2000, the musical’s themes of self discovery, identity and perseverance still offer valuable messages to modern audiences. Set to a score of contemporary music, the show follows the story of main characters Peter and Jason as they navigate through conflict in their relationship while attending a Catholic boarding school.

FUNDING FOR POLICE BODY CAMERAS EXCLUDED IN PROPOSED CITY BUDGET

The City of Walla Walla excluded body cameras in the proposed biennium budget for the Walla Walla Police Department (WWPD), which was released Oct. 31, 2022. Along with the cameras, WWPD requested an additional records keeping position due to staffing shortages and the extra work required to comply with body worn cameras (BWC)-related public disclosure requests. Chief's Advisory Committee members and Walla Walla City Council members weigh in on this decision.

JOHNSON-SENSEI: IN MEMORIAM

Hitomi Kosaka Johnson, born on Dec. 14, 1955, was a friend, professor, scholar, teacher and akin to a grandmother away from home. In her beautiful and brilliant 66 years of life, Johnson-sensei made the world an infinitely more beautiful and caring place. She brought joy to everyone who knew her and cared so very much for not just her students, but also her friends, family and everyone she met. The n-word was tweeted over 500 percent more than usual on the day Elon Musk bought Twitter. Musk spent $44 billion (which is 26,666 times what the average American makes in a lifetime) to purchase the app. Since this purchase, the app has tanked, just like Tesla’s stock and Elon Musk’s hair count. Thousands have been laid off, major advertisers have pulled out, regulation of content seems to be nonexistent or targeted and a new subscription service has been announced that Musk’s own Twitter poll showed nobody wanted. In short, Elon Musk is single-handedly burning down one of the world’s largest social media platforms.

"ROBBED WOMEN" CALLS ATTENTION TO HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND EXPLOITATION

On Tuesday, Nov. 1, students and faculty gathered in the Freimann Studio for a staged reading of “Robbed Women,” a new one-act play by senior Sylvia Adome. Adome, an international student from Busia, Kenya, with a double major in economics and theater, wrote this play in partial fulfillment of her theater major. The play addresses various themes such as sex, domestic violence, human trafficking and poverty and featured an all-African cast.

As the rain persists and the trees abandon their last remaining leaves, the promise of winter both excites and distresses students. For students experiencing seasonal affective disorder, the cold weather welcomes gray skies, as well as gloomy minds — and daylight savings hasn’t helped matters.
