April 2020
Welcome from the President's Desk
We all need to find the silver lining in this cloud of COVID-19 and we need to be creative in the search.  Think outside the box, explore what is possible, crazy ideas are welcome because they often lead to the best idea. Tell us what initiatives your U3A has implemented to maintain contact and support for members?  The Network would appreciate knowing these actions as they may be of interest and help to other Member U3As in coping with this strange new world of self isolation and distancing.

As I enjoyed my walk this morning I thought to replace our much anticipated Conference in lovely Shellharbour with a COVID Conference.   This thought came because after the Regional Forum in Lismore recently, a member emailed me with the plan she had for creating a yellow dress to wear to the Conference so she could be promote her region of the Far North Coast.  I was thrilled with her endeavour and am now disappointed that she will not have the opportunity to wear her yellow dress.  So not to disappoint I thought on 29 April we could all dress in our Region's colours (check the map of NSW on the Network's website), be it a scarf or garment for the ladies, bow tie or hat for the men and enjoy morning tea with scones and think of Shellharbour and what could have been.   If this excites you please email me at u3answ.pres@gmail.com with a photo commemorating your 'conference' day.

My inspiration to share is:

Are you bored in the lock down?

U3A Network NSW Inc. represents 66 Member U3As in NSW.  We wish to identify members who are able to contribute and have contemporary skills that will add to the capability of the Network in supporting our Member U3As.  To this end we have prepared a survey to allow you to make contact with the Network at this time.  Click the image below to learn more and complete the survey.

The Network's Website is dynamic and its Coronavirus Bulletins (click the image above) page takes you to our Special Bulletins with information regarding the pandemic and some links to external sources of perspectives of our world in 2020.  We'll keep adding tips from our U3A members on sources of helpful Remote Learning possibilities.  Self Isolation and Social Distancing are the new normal and if you have an idea to submit, if so, please email it to info@nsw.u3anet.org.au .

SCAMS
The Scammers are having a field day with our communities in our isolation and making more use of the internet.  The villains are certainly making the most of the confusion and stress of COVID-19.

Many Member U3As offer a course on internet security, the technical term is Cyber Security and the Network has added a couple of pages to our website that will likely assist you in getting your bearings on this issue.  Please do specific research on a topic that may be of importance to you, good old Google is still the best way to find help to address a specific situation, e.g. search Google for strong passwords easy to remember

Very Important Information

Annual General Meeting

Current regulations initiated to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic precluded our AGM

Your Management Committee has accepted advice from both the DFT (Department of Fair Trading) and that of Justice Connect, and acted accordingly
  1. An application is being made to DFT for an extension of time to conduct the AGM
  2. The Network will convene a SGM to give rise to amending the Constitution to allow for Electronic General Meetings
Present indications of the measures employed by Government, is that public gatherings or gatherings of any size will be precluded until September. Once a date is known we will then be faced with the calling for nominations, 35 days and notice of meeting + 21 days, possible date for the AGM is mid to late October. Timing is in the hands of the Government in terms of when that process can commence.

As the AGM will be conducted without the additional attraction of the Annual Conference a location suitable to the Membership will need to be a consideration to suit, at least, the greater majority of the Membership.

The Management Committee has agreed that an amendment should be proposed to the Constitution to allow for an electronic vote at General Meetings and AGMs. If agreed, this will facilitate an earlier AGM this year, than what the current Health restrictions may allow, and will address any inconvenience for many members travelling to some central NSW location.

Nominations for Office Bearers and Committee Members will then be called.
