August 2021

Dear Jessica

Welcome to the August issue of our monthly Member Focus, a newsletter from your Association to help keep you informed about  membership support activities. Whilst this email is sent to you personally, please do not hesitate to pass this newsletter onto others in your company who may find it useful.

Whilst it is holiday season for most, the CAB team have been busy supporting members in a more rapidly changing market. We have recently conducted a survey of our members as to how the proposed Future Homes changes will effect our industry, the report can be accessed on this CAB website link.

Despite the challenges ahead with increased thermal insulation requirements it seems that most members will rise to the challenge ahead. For those of you who wish to become more involved with the pending changes and have your say, there is a new Working Group of the Technical Committee been set up to focus on Part L (and Part F). Please let me know or any of the CAB Team know if you would like to be involved.

We want all our members to have their voice heard and one of the ways we can achieve that is by getting involved!

Leeds Armouries

We are delighted to announce the speaker line-up for our forthcoming Members’ meeting on 14 October at Royal Armouries, Leeds.

Speakers

The Rt Hon Esther McVey MP
Currently MP for Tatton, Esther was Minister of State at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, Secretary of State for Work & Pensions and Minister of State for Employment and worked with three Prime Ministers; David Cameron, Theresa May & Boris Johnson.

Esther will discuss the ins and outs of the lobby / consultation process from an ex minister’s point of view. Before her political career, she was a director of her family’s Construction business and TV presenter and producer. Esther always provides any interesting and informative speech and Q&A session.

Andy Boutle, Head of BIM at Keir Construction and engagement co-lead for UK BIM Alliance
Andy will talk about digital transformation and information management across the UK built environment sector.  He will explain UK BIM Alliance aims to ensure BIM becomes business as usual whilst at the same time, transforming and future proofing the way the sector work.

He has over 17 years’ experience in the construction industry, with a background in mechanical engineering, project management and CAD, working for both consultants and contractors.

Uday Patel, Senior Research Manager, Global Aluminium Markets at Wood Mackenzie
Uday will present an authoritative and enthusiastic talk on the short to medium-term outlook for the aluminium market.  Power restrictions in China is adding to concerns over the medium term outlook for production growth, while in the rest of the world the shift to greater usage of low-carbon metal is also creating tightness in availability.  Is the aluminium industry heading for a supply crunch over the next 10 years? Uday will assess the impact of the many factors affecting the aluminium market.

He has over 30 years of experience in the metals and mining sector covering aluminium and joined Wood Mackenzie in 2014.  During his career he has worked on a range of projects in both the upstream and downstream aluminium sectors, including detailed market studies, cost analyses and strategic advisory work for clients.

The meeting will conclude with CAB’s 27th AGM, which was postponed from 1 July.

CAB’s Industry Trends Survey

The results of the second quarter survey have been published and available on the CAB website. With the ONS revising its dip in construction output in 2020 to a fall of 14% and the CPA forecast for a growth this year of 13.7%, it seems that the UK industry continues to bounce back. On the downside, there is the shortage of materials and skilled labour followed with the inevitable rise in costs connected with these shortages. The report can be accessed on this CAB website link.

It requires up to 95% less energy to recycle aluminium than to produce primary metal and thereby avoids corresponding emissions, including greenhouse gases.

CAB Residential Website Update

There has been a refresh of images on our CAB residential website to better reflect the aspirations and grand designs of homeowners. The website is packed with useful generic information about aluminium which is intended to offer a simple guide for purchasers.

Please feel free to use, or direct your customers to the website in order to answer many of the questions raised about aluminium.
