OIE collaboration on tackling agro-crime
affecting animal health and welfare

With the support of Global Affairs Canada, the OIE co-hosted a workshop with INTERPOL on agro-crime affecting animal health and welfare to enhance collaboration between the law enforcement and veterinary sectors. The outputs of this workshop will help to develop a roadmap for use by Veterinary Services and law enforcement, which will outline opportunities and methods to enhance collaboration with the goal of tackling agro-crime.

This month's News also features an article by the OIE Director General on
climate change, provides further insight into veterinary workforce development, updates on the spread of H5N8 avian influenza  and more.

AT A GLANCE

#CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change – an added complexity to addressing health risks

Climate change impacts the health of every person, animal, plant, body of water and soil type. There is no one living thing – terrestrial or aquatic, vertebrate or invertebrate – that is not nor will not be affected by rising temperatures and extreme weather patterns. Read the full article by OIE Director General Dr Monique Éloit published in last month's F@rmLetter of the World Farmers' Organisation.

Veterinary workforce development: the relevance of skill qualification, education and occupational frameworks

As the OIE embarks on new initiatives regarding veterinary workforce development, it is timely to consider the role and relevance of international frameworks for standardising and comparing skills attainment, educational qualifications and occupations with reference to the veterinary domain. These frameworks help build consistency across countries, standards for certification, and can contribute to improved mobility for students and professionals.

Updates on the spread of H5N8 avian influenza from an African perspective

As winter sets in in Europe and Eurasia, millions of migratory birds head south to Africa; this  raises concern that the ongoing and spreading epizootic of avian influenza A type H5N8 may be reaching African shores, if this is not already the case.
