State of the Schools: Join us!

Join us for our annual State of the Schools session on Thursday, October 27th from 6-7pm in the Edison High School Media Center (2nd floor). State of the Schools is a great time to learn about Edison, including our demographics, data (academics, behavior, school climate), school improvement goals and strategies, and programming.

We will spend some time with you in small, informal Circles to:

  • Share information

  • Gather your feedback

Circles will be offered in English, Spanish, Somali, and Pashtu languages.

  • Light refreshments will be served.

  • Children are welcome! We will have childcare support from our Volunteer Club, as well as toys and activities to occupy your little ones.

Staffing Updates

Across the nation, staffing shortages are impacting businesses and institutions at unprecedented rates. At Edison, we are managing both leaves of absence and resignations, temporarily leaving us without a licensed teacher in a few classrooms. We want to make you aware of current and future classroom teacher vacancies at Edison, as well as our plan for interim support and hiring. We are fortunate to continue to work with a dedicated team of educators who step up every day to support new teachers and fill in where we are without a teacher. Our students continue to be well cared for and focused on learning. If you have any questions or concerns about our vacancies or mitigation plan, please contact Principal Warne at 612-668-1300 or eryn.warne@mpls.k12.mn.us.

Class: Spanish 1

Current Status: Jesus Purisca, a native Spanish speaker and long-time educator, has been hired as the newest member of our World Language team. Jesus is awaiting licensure from the MN Department of Education. Until his license is finalized, he is being supervised by licensed teachers and leaders at Edison High School.

Future Plans: Mr. Purisca’s license is expected to be finalized in November. Throughout this year, he will continue to receive new teacher support and mentoring.

Class: Design

Current Status: Christina Moreno (Tina), a veteran educator supporting both Special Education and testing at Edison, has been hired. Tina is awaiting licensure from the MN Department of Education. Until her license is finalized, she is being supervised by licensed teachers and leaders at Edison High School.

Future Plans: Ms. Moreno’s license is expected to be finalized in November. Throughout this year. She will continue to receive new teacher support and mentoring.

Class: Physical Education

Current Status: Daryl Brown will finish Quarter 1 at Edison before moving on to a new profession in Juvenile Justice.

Future Plans: Short-call substitute teachers will support our PE classes until we are able to find a teacher or a qualified long-call substitute. Members of our PE/Health team will support with lessons and grading until a permanent replacement is found.

Class: Business

Current Status: With Kimberly Pruitt on leave, Justin Fogel has been filling in as a long-call substitute. Mr. Fogel has a Business degree, a reserve teacher license, and is being supported by our Career and Technical Education department with curriculum and lessons.

Future Plans: We are working to determine a return from leave. Until then, we expect Mr. Fogel to continue with us.

Class: Social Studies

Current Status: Eric Fleming, World and US History teacher, will be with us until the last day of the Quarter (11/3).

Future Plans: We are fortunate to have Amelia Marquez here as a student teacher in our Social Studies department. We have invited Amelia to apply to work with us as a Tier 1 teacher while her official license is processed. In order to allow her to finish her student teaching assignment, we may have a short-call sub in place temporarily.

Class: Physics

Current Status: Our Physics teacher, Josef Steiner, very recently resigned from his post–his last day with us was October 17.

Future Plans: A substitute teacher will be placed in the Physics classroom and supported by our Science department. We are actively seeking a full-time, permanent replacement.

Class: Visual Art

Current Status: Our Ceramics teacher, Krista Marino, will move to a half-time position beginning November 7th. We have recently hired Katie Flynn, a licensed and experienced Visual Art teacher to share Krista’s position.

Future Plans: Katie will begin at Edison on November 7th and will teach Ceramics 1 in the mornings. Beginning Semester 2, Katie will teach both Ceramics 1 and 2 in the mornings, while Krista continues teaching Ceramics 1, IB Art, and Advisory.

Class: Student Based Special Education

Current Status: We have had an open Special Education teaching position open since the beginning of the school year.

Future Plans: The SB program has been closed to new enrollments until a hire can be made. We are currently able to serve all of our students in the SB program with one teacher.

Educational Support Professionals

Current Status: We have a few remaining open positions for Special Education Assistants in our Autism and DCD programs. One member of the Safety and Security team is on temporary leave–we are covering his absence from within the Safety team.

Future Plans: Our teaching staff and current SEAs are working together to guarantee that all Special Education supports and services are being delivered. We are actively seeking qualified SEAs to come on board at Edison.

We invite you to share our job postings for both teachers (a current license or qualifications–a 4-year degree and related experience–for a Tier 1 license is required) and Special Education assistants (60 Semester credits or successful completion of the ParaPro exam required). You can find open positions at the link below (just type “Edison” as the keyword).
