Hello everyone!

DEI@UMSI is so excited to send out the first newsletter of the school year. For those new to UMSI, The Cloud is a monthly newsletter sent out with events, updates, and announcements all related to DEI.

For this month's issue, we will learn about the U-M central DEI 2022 Summit and the upcoming UMSI DEI Community Gathering, be introduced to the DEI Office staff and Committee members, along with other DEI events & resources. National Disability Employment Month is all about acknowledging the contributions employees with disabilities make in the workplace. If you would like to get more involved at U-M check out the Council for Disability Concerns you can sign up for the newsletter, register to be a part of the council or even volunteer!

The UMSI DEI Office and DEI Committee invite you to a Community Gathering to share highlights from DEI 1.0, the 5-year period 2016-2021 of focused effort to make UMSI more equitable, diverse, inclusive and anti-racist. Many of you have contributed both time and energy towards this cause and demonstrated great dedication to improving our community. We know that others will do the same in the future!

Let’s come together for FOOD, music, fun and reflection as we launch DEI 2.0 planning! All members of the UMSI community are welcome! 

RSVP requested for planning purposes but not required.

Remarks will be live streamed for those participating remotely 
* live stream link will be emailed to everyone who registered and also sent out broadly to the UMSI community prior to the event

What are office hours?


Office hours are opportunities for the UMSI community to connect with UMSI’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Office staff. 
 


What kind of topics can we discuss during office hours? 


Feel free to talk to us about ANYTHING!
Here is a brief list of things people come to us for:
  • If you face any issues related to diversity, equity, and/or inclusion, this includes topics like bias/racism or accessibility issues. 
  • You have concerns about the school climate.
  • There is an exciting event or program you'd like to bring to UMSI that serves marginalized identities, highlights cross-cultural perspectives, and/or has a focus on equity. 
  • You'd like more information about the DEI Funding and assistance with the application process.

DEI FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Do you want to host a DEI-related speaker, travel to a conference, or start a project at UMSI?  Well, these events could be funded by UMSI’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Office and DEI Committee!
 
 

The UMSI DEI Funding may be used for:

  • Speaker or facilitator fees/honorariums
  • Conference or webinar attendance or other training opportunities to support individual learning and professional development 
  • Conference attendance to support networking and career development focusing on members of underrepresented groups or identities
  • Refreshments or meals
  • Supplies, materials, resources, or equipment
  • Other expenses that support the stated activity
     


Request Process

Funding requests should be made well in advance, ideally 4-6 weeks before your activity or event will take place. DEIO Staff will review funding requests and decide in consultation with the DEI Committee. The committee will provide an initial response within 7 days and a decision within 14 days of receiving the request. for more information check out the website .

SIGN UP FOR VOLUNTEER OUTREACH

The UMSI Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Office (DEIO) wants to connect UMSI students with outreach opportunities to spread awareness of the field of Information Science to underrepresented and diverse students. This includes
K-12 outreach and collaborations with campus partners.  Please complete this interest form if you are interested in being notified of and participating in future outreach opportunities.
