God Loves a Cheerful Giver
Pastor Mark Wagner
Today I ran into a verse that I have read before, and it refreshed my heart. Paul is reminding the believers in 2 Corinthians 9 that whoever sows generously will also reap generously. He goes on to say, “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
Notice the words “not reluctantly” or “under compulsion.” I think cheerful giving speaks to our heart of thanksgiving for God’s heart of grace and generosity. We reflect His love-gift when we give with a heart delighted at the prospect. The Greek word “cheerful” here is connected to the English word “hilarious”. It should bring us joy to give to our Lord—with an overflow of enjoyment present. There is no sense of “Do I have to?” or “I guess it is my duty.”
Over the years people have asked me, “Do I have to give…how much is required?” But never has anyone stopped me and asked, “Pastor, can I please give more?” God’s Word is challenging us to look for opportunities to give hilariously. Try it! Teach it to your children. Discuss it at dinner. Notice the overflow of joy. Remember, when we give freely and cheerfully, God loves what He sees.
