Thursday, April 7, 6:30 PM: Women in Jazz with Galen Abdur-Razzaq

Women have been involved in Jazz since the early 1920s, not only as vocalists, but also as instrumentalists, composers, and arrangers. An understanding of jazz would not be complete without highlighting the influence and contributions of these women. Join us to learn about the personal and professional lives of women musicians in a time when many considered jazz “a man’s world”. Galen will explore a full spectrum of years, genre, recordings, and recognized achievements. The program will include live performances by Galen Abdur-Razzaq, a renowned flautist. A Q&A will follow.

Galen is a flautist with an extensive performance career. He also speaks on the topic of jazz at colleges and universities for over thirty years. A former educator, he holds a Master's Degree from Rutgers University in Education and Performing Arts, and he studied music at Berklee school of Music in Boston. Embracing his love of music and desire to continue educating, he offers an engaging and enjoyable path to music appreciation through music programs comprised of music performances, and lectures. He aims to provide attendees with an understanding and appreciation of jazz and its historical significance--a true American Heritage.

A Zoom webinar brought to you by Centerville Public Library, Chilmark Public Library, Snow Library, Truro Public Library, and Vineyard Haven Public Library.

Thursday, April 14 at 10:30 AM: The Paris Library, Author Talk with Janet Skeslien Charles.

Janet Skeslien Charles will join us via Zoom from Paris for a discussion of her new best-selling novel, The Paris Library, recently published in 2021. Based on the true World War II story of the heroic librarians at the American Library in Paris, The Paris Library is a book for lovers of books and libraries and historical fiction. In Paris, 1939, young and ambitious Odile Souchet seems to have the perfect life with her handsome police officer beau and a dream job at the American Library in Paris. When the Nazis march into the city, together with her fellow librarians, Odile joins the Resistance with the best weapons she has: books. Switch to Montana, 1983, Lily is a lonely teenager looking for adventure in small-town Montana. Her interest is piqued by her solitary, elderly neighbor, Odile. As Lily uncovers more about her neighbor's mysterious past, she finds that they share a love of language, the same longings, and the same intense jealousy, never suspecting that a dark secret from the past connects them.
Janet Skeslien Charles is the award-winning author of Moonlight in Odessa and The Paris Library. Her shorter work has appeared in revues such as Slice and Montana Noir. She learned about the history of the American Library in Paris while working there as the programs manager. She divides her time between Montana and Paris.

Tuesdays at 5:30 PM: Online Yoga with Valerie Sonnenthal of Peaked Hill Studio.

Peaked Hill Studio yoga is designed so we can live better and longer lives. It’s all about biomechanical health or freedom of movement working through chronic pain & injuries, general aches & stiffness, and is designed for all body types, all levels of experience, and can be modified to fit all conditions. Class moves at a slower pace allowing you to connect to the natural rhythm inside your body, creating a deeper connection. Using gravity and the floor the body can adapt without over demand. Many poses are floor-based to allow our joints to read information that connects the nervous system to the changes happening while allowing the tissue to repattern. If you can't get to the floor, you can use your bed, a sofa or chair.
Props or equivalent: 1 yoga mat, 1 strap, belt or scarf, 1 bolster, different pillows or mat (can be rolled in a blanket), chair or foot stool if needed.

Valerie Sonnenthal, owner of Chilmark's Peaked Hill Studio, just completed another 300 hour Kaiut Yoga Teacher training, bringing her to 900+ training hours. She has been studying in the last year with Revolution in Motion creator Dr. Edythe Heus, has just started a nine-month Trauma Healing training, writes the Chilmark Town Column for the MV Times, and is a member of the Cleaveland House Poets.
