WELCOME 2020
 HAPPY NEW YEAR
from all of us at

CVM / Cook's Mercantile

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pruning the grapevines is in full swing,
as
“Vintage 2020” has officially begun.
The
weather so far this winter has been great for everything; the precipitation is helping
to fill the
lakes and aquifers.
With the
cold weather predicted, it is a great time to make sure your irrigation valves are protected from any hard freezes in January.
Does this cold weather
affect the grapevines?
The answer is a simple one... No.
This time of year, the grapevines are dormant
and are waiting the warming of the soil,
to begin their annual growth cycle.
This normally begins in late March and early April, depending on the variety of the grape.
These
cold mornings do not have any effect on the dormant vines, and will not be an issue, until green tissue begins to emerge, around late March.
 Cold dry days, may be a blessing, as it allows us to prune without the fear of spreading Eutypa,
a vine disease, with spores that are
moisture activated,
and can enter the fresh pruning wound.
 Eutypa, causes death of spurs, arms, cordons, canes, and sometimes the upper section of the trunk, depending on the location of the wood canker.
Wedge-shaped wood cankers form in infected wood.
Almost all vineyards, could spread this disease
within its borders, that is why we
do not prune
on rainy days.
Eutypa can be fatal for the grapevine; therefore, if you look closely on the pruning cuts,
many of us
apply B-Lock (looks like paint)
on the fresh pruning wounds,
to protect the vine from spreading this disease.
This
substance is like a liquid band aid.
Even when, we do not have any rain in the forecast, we apply it this time of year because it can take up to a week or so for a pruning cut to heal.
January will be a busy month with all the pruning, cordon tying and weed abatement tasks.
We are all looking forward to another great year in
“Sonoma’s Wine Country”
