Zinfandel of the Month –  For August 2020

2018 Ridge Vineyards Zinfandel Pagani Ranch

Tom Lee of the
 Zinfandel Chronicles

My rating: 96 points.

Bright crimson in color. 14.9% ABV. 84% Zinfandel, 9% Alicante Bouschet and 7% Petite Sirah. Gorgeous nose of red fruits, peach and pepper. Medium body with mouth watering acidity. Bright and juicy. Boysenberry, raspberry liqueur, earth and pepper on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish.
Every bit as good as the the stunning 2017 Pagani.
Best over the next 4-6 years

Release date: September 1, 2020

When I first became interested in Zinfandel the buzz was always around the Three R's of Zinfandel: Ravenswood, Rosenblum and Ridge. 25 years later Ridge is still at the top of its game, turning out single vineyard Zinfandel from some of California's most precious vineyards.

I chose this wine as Zinfandel of the Month because the 2017 version was absolutely breathtaking the 2018 vintage is one of the best
Zinfandel vintages in recent memory.

Pagani Ranch is just off Highway 12 in the Glen Ellen area of Sonoma County.  Angela and Felice Pagani came to Sonoma County from Italy, purchased the property and planted the vineyard in the early 1900’s.
In addition to Ridge the fruit goes to
Carlisle, Seghesio, Biale & Bedrock

We carry a variety of E.B.Stone soils,

It's Hang Time!

"Sonoma is unique."

While sipping our Sonoma,
world-class wines,
most wine consumers would
readily agree with this statement.

Vintages like “Vintage 2020,”
will continue to prove,
that Sonoma's terroir makes for a perfect spot
to grow some of the
best wine grapes in the world.

With that said, every vintage has its issues and concerns.

What issues and concerns,
are we facing for “Vintage 2020?"

All year, “Vintage 2020” has been on the
slow road to greatness.

We experienced a normal bud-break,
and from there, our weather and growth timing, are in sync.

In simple terms, this growing year has been another picture-perfect season.

Our crop will be a little less than
last year's vintage, but in the end will create some great concentrated wines.

It is always quality, versus quantity
and quality is winning!

Our only concern is, that Mother-Nature
keeps up the great weather
for another month and a half.

Our early harvested varieties,
like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir,
can’t handle much,
if any, rain during its ripening stage.

Other varieties, can handle a little precipitation, but most growers would love to see a rain-free, harvest season.

In the next few weeks we will be entering what we call
“Hang Time Mode.”

The grapes are slowly maturing and collecting
unique flavors.

Ripening time, is a very vulnerable period for our
wine-grapes, and we are all hoping for warm weather without a lot of morning fog.
Turkeys and Deer and Wild Pigs, Oh My!
Birds can be an issue during harvest;
like us they love to eat grapes!

Bird netting is the best defense to help protect the crops from our feathered friends;
but many times, just installing shiny, Mylar Tape
high in the canopy, is enough.
Another pest this time of year is the yellow jacket.

They can eat part of the grapes which cause small holes and they become unpickable.

Not to mention, that many pickers,
after being stung while harvesting,
would say that
yellow jackets
do a lot more than just hurt the fruit

Deer,  turkeys and pigs also like to eat grapes, but normally  they don’t eat enough to cause concern.

Deer are more of an issue at the
beginning of the season,
when they feed on the tender young shoots.

So far, our journey down the slow road to greatness, has had very few bumps along the way, and is turning out to be one of the best growing seasons we have seen for a while.

Hopefully as we turn the corner to harvest,
the birds, bees, pigs, turkeys, deer and mostly,
Mother Nature
will take it easy on us and
lets this season end the way it started.

Slow, Steady and Exceptional!

Quote of the week:

The sun, with all those planets revolving around it and dependent on it, can still ripen a bunch of grapes
as if it had nothing else in the universe to do.
