"Vintage 2020” has begun
and our rainfall totals are at average...for now.

Our Water Year is (10/1/2019 through 9/30/2020),
and to date we have received 10.45 inches of rain.

At this time, we are behind last year,
by about 8 inches.

Our yearly average is 23.77 inches which
puts us at less than half of what we need to be on track.

There is no rain in the immediate forecast; so we need to hope that February will be a wet month!

Does an above average rain year,
hurt the vineyards?

The simple answer is No.
However, there is always the concern about controlling erosion and flooding.

We would begin worrying about too much rain,
later in the season (April) once the vines begin to grow.

Another question;
when is enough rainfall, enough?

Timing of storms is crucial to our stored water, lakes, ponds, aquifers and snowpack.
Sometimes it can be a bit confusing in determining when enough is enough.

If there were an equation, to see how much more rain is needed, for the rest of the year;
it would be based on things like snowpack,
unused water runoff during the larger storms,
how much rain actually soaked into the ground
and local lake levels.

As of January 27th 2020, Lake Sonoma is at 91.3% and Lake Mendocino is at 113.6% of water capacity.

 Lake levels are based on flood control levels and can exceed 100%, due to calculations.

Another part of the equation is the timing
of our rain events.

The heavy rains we need and hopefully will be coming this month, help in water conservation,
throughout the Spring.

Heading into the dryer growing season
with saturated soils, will enable many vineyards
to hold off their first irrigation, to later than normal.

Also, when we are fortunate enough to get a couple inches of rain every other week,  it allows the water to penetrate the soil, where it will be stored in aquifers
and not just runoff into the bay.

Hopfully this will be the case for
“Vintage 2020”

Quote of the Week:

“What good is the warmth of summer, without the

cold of winter to give it sweetness.”
