What Makes A Successful Harvest?


Living in the "vine country" has its rewards.
Our landscape is scattered with vineyards and our climate is perfect for growing world-class wine-grapes.

In the next few months we will begin our harvest,
“Crush 2019.”  Two months of
controlled mayhem, 
that brings our industry together
as well as, an end to another great season!

Even though we work very hard during this time of year,
it’s a great time to reconnect with nature and
those who are part of our wine community.

Wine makers, viticulturist and wine enthusiast that make Sonoma a great place to live, work and partake in some of the world's greatest wines!



Weather is the most important ingredient
for a successful harvest.

Mild temperatures, allow the matured grapes more
hang-time, giving them a few extra days, to soak up more flavor, that will be enjoyed for many years to come. 

A successful harvest is also created by
all the many individuals, who work in the industry.

“Crush” is when we all come together as a community,
to work toward a common goal... A great harvest!

Teamwork is crucial to our success.


Sonoma, is also fortunate to have an extended arid season,             during the September and October harvests. 


This is a crucial time for the maturing grapes, as the

hang-time, allows key components to mature,

adding more unique and distinct flavors to the


Most of our wine is hand-picked, which is
extremely labor intensive.

This makes it especially mind blowing, when you see a truck
leaving a vineyard, loaded with 20 tons of hand-picked grapes heading to the winery!


In the next few weeks, we will be arming our vineyards
with Mylar tape.


The shiny metallic ribbons are a necessity, to scare off birds.

The small breezes in the vineyard along with the ultraviolet light, will cause the tape to glimmer and keep the birds away.

Made from an iridescent red and silver Mylar film,
Flash Tape is specially designed to reflect sunlight and crackle in the wind, 
creating a visual and
auditory distraction zone.


There are many predators during harvest time.

Deer, Turkeys, Wild Pigs, Y
ellowjackets, Birds and

a variety of other varmints, that look forward to 
snacking on our ripened grapes.

Even though we can protect our crops with fencing and other deterrents, giving a little back to nature, does occur.


That’s another great thing about Sonoma, sharing the wealth.

Your Recipe for the Best Tomatoes on the Block!

So, I now know,  the little tomatoes are in fact, Current Tomatoes, the yellow are, Yellow Pear and the larger red are, Black Cherry Tomatoes.  The Current are still coming in, but fewer every day.  However, the Yellow Pear and Black Cherry are a few weeks away from being ripe...but there will be A LOT!!!

So, to keep it interesting, we are adding a new twist to our hands on cheese making classes...

We will still make cheese or cheeses at each class... plus,  we will now incorporate the cheese with a recipe, using in-season ingredients, that you can easily reproduce at home!
Tomato, Peach & Fetter Creek Feta Salad
This is what we will be making at our Friday, August 2nd, 2019 class 
Sheana Davis and David Cook collaborated on this version of Feta.  This is David's favorite cheese and he wanted to add his own personal twist...of course with Sheana's guidance!    AND,  if they are ready, we will include some of the tomatoes from my "Crazy Tomato Plants!
The details of the rest of the classes are still being finalized; and updates will be coming soon...

2019 Cheese Class Schedule 

Our Cheese Classes are the First Friday of each Month,
from1:00 - 3:00 p.m. (unless otherwise noted.)

Complimentary Wine Tasting is included in each class. 
Each participant receives a recipe, and a delicious sample of cheese. 
Artisanal cheeses for tasting before and during class.
Our informative and highly interactive classes are taught by the
award winning team from The Epicurean Connection.

Each cheese class is $40.00, payable at time of registration.

Free Refractometer and pH Meter Checks

Harvest will be here before we know it, and we thought it would be a great time to start getting things in order.

         On Friday, August 9th from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm,  
John, from the Home Wine Lab will be here, at the CVM Store, providing a free maintenance service on all refractometers and pH meters.


Or, if you need a new refractometer or pH meter,
we will have them here for sale.


All you have to do is bring your instruments into the store, and we’ll check them against a known standard. If there are any adjustments that need to be made, we’ll calibrate them or inform you of any issues.
