~ Vintage 2020 ~

Our Best Guess is,

We Are Right on Schedule.

“Vintage 2020”
has been an interesting year so far.

I think that may be an understatement!

The late rains and cool weather in April
followed by hot days in May and June,
have had us all on edge.

The good news is,
Mother Nature’s wrath
hasn’t caused us as many issues
as one might think.

Most of the vineyards are successfully
going through the
flowering process (bloom).

Even though it is still early in the season,
it looks as if we have an average crop,
at least quantity wise.

We are at the beginning stages
of opening the fruit zone,
by removing some laterals (horizontal growth).
This year due to the heat waves,
we are being careful
not to remove too much growth.

We call this task, “Lateral Removal."
This will allow the proper
amount of filtered sunlight,
to be exposed to the grapes;
which is essential to growing high-quality grapes.

During this task we also tuck the shoots
in the wires, “Shoot Tucking”
and remove any unwanted growth on the trunks, “Trunk Suckering.”

Trunk Suckering

June, July and August are normally hot months
in the wine country,
so keeping the vineyards hydrated
is always a concern.

This time of year, the rule of thumb is,
5 to 8 gallons of water a week,
per established vine.

In the case of rocky soil,
the vines may need more water,
while clay soil requires less.

Overwatering a vineyard,
leads to unwanted vigorous growth.

Under watering can cause Vine Stress,
or even the death of the plant;
compromising its fruiting capability.

So how do we know when,
and how much, to irrigate?
Sprinklers In The Vineyard

To the trained eye, you can visually see the growing tip,
at the top of the vines.

We monitor these tips and begin irrigating
when they begin to stress (droop)
due to lack of water.

Scheduled watering,
three times a week is a good plan.

Let's say you are targeting 6 gallons per week; watering on Monday, Wednesday, Friday
with the irrigation of 2 gallons each time
would be a great strategy.

Drip Irrigation In The Vineyard

Conservation of our most valuable commodity, water, is an important issue.

We will be spending a lot of time making sure our irrigation systems are doing their job
and we are giving each plant
the right amount of water it needs.

Quote of the week-

“In the spring, at the end of the day, you should
smell like dirt.”
