In the next several weeks,

all the vineyards,

will start showing signs of veraison.

Veraison represents the transition from berry growth to berry ripening.

This time is best described as,
when the grape clusters
begin to change colors.

In the red varieties, from green to red,
or from green to a translucent color,
 in the white varieties.

After veraison, the grape clusters
will begin to produce and store sugars
that will be converted into alcohol.

These sugars are measured in units of brix.

  One-degree brix,
is one gram of sucrose
in 100 grams of solution,
and represents the strength of the solution,
as percentage by weight

Most wine grapes grown in Sonoma,
are harvested at a higher brix level
than in other parts of the world.

Is our grape harvest
right on schedule for a normal year; and how does this affect quality?

The only one that can answer this question is, Mother Nature.

If things stay the same,
and no big surprises from Mother Nature,
our harvest (crush)
may be a little earlier than normal.

There are two things
that have a great effect on quality,
when farming wine-grapes.
The first being crop load.

At the beginning of the season,
most high-quality vineyards have a predicted crop load, it will expect to have, to ripen its fruit while keeping a well-balanced vine.

This year, due to the great growing weather, this crop load is higher than normal
and allows us to drop fruit to achieve that predicted crop load.

During this process (fruit-drop) we can retain the best of the best grape-clusters.

 Vine balance
has been defined and calculated as the ratio between vine yield
and vine size
The second is hang-time.

“Vintage 2020” is ahead of schedule,
and if this continues and we have a cool autumn,
we will be able to delay harvest without worrying about early winter rains.

Leaving the grapes maturing on the vine
for an extra few weeks,
will allow the grapes to produce
extra flavor components.

This extra time on the vine,
produces a very high-quality wine.

This physiological ripeness,
is a more complete ripeness
of tannins and other phenolic compounds,
that contribute to color,
flavor and aromas in the wine.

In other words;
the ability to harvest the grapes
when they are at their maximum ripeness,
ensures a higher quality of fruit.
