Zinfandel of the Month –  For August 2020

2018 Ridge Vineyards Zinfandel Pagani Ranch

Tom Lee of the
 Zinfandel Chronicles

My rating: 96 points.

Bright crimson in color. 14.9% ABV. 84% Zinfandel, 9% Alicante Bouschet and 7% Petite Sirah. Gorgeous nose of red fruits, peach and pepper. Medium body with mouth watering acidity. Bright and juicy. Boysenberry, raspberry liqueur, earth and pepper on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish.
Every bit as good as the the stunning 2017 Pagani.
Best over the next 4-6 years

Release date: September 1, 2020

When I first became interested in Zinfandel the buzz was always around the Three R's of Zinfandel: Ravenswood, Rosenblum and Ridge. 25 years later Ridge is still at the top of its game, turning out single vineyard Zinfandel from some of California's most precious vineyards.

I chose this wine as Zinfandel of the Month because the 2017 version was absolutely breathtaking the 2018 vintage is one of the best
Zinfandel vintages in recent memory.

Pagani Ranch is just off Highway 12 in the Glen Ellen area of Sonoma County.  Angela and Felice Pagani came to Sonoma County from Italy, purchased the property and planted the vineyard in the early 1900’s.
In addition to Ridge the fruit goes to
Carlisle, Seghesio, Biale & Bedrock

We carry a variety of E.B.Stone soils,
plant foods & fertilizers,
as well as aeration Grow Bags.

Summer Is Two-Thirds Over

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The vines have turned most of their energy towards
ripening their fruit.
“Vintage 2020” is looking great!
This leads us to a frequently asked question;
“Why do the vines look a little weathered
this time of year?”
World-class fruit comes from vineyards that are stressed during their ripening stage.
 The once lush green leaves, turn a lighter green, or even yellow and the vines start losing their Basal Leaves.
Basal leaves are those that are located
around the fruit zone.
These leaves turn yellow and fall off.
Sometimes they are removed by hand
earlier in the season.
This is a natural occurrence to allow more air flow and sunlight around the grape clusters.
To the untrained eye, one may think the vineyard needs more water or is unhealthy,
but this is not the case.
This time of year, we regulate the irrigation
in the vineyard, based on the soil type and weather conditions.
Due to the late spring rains
and the relatively warm days and cool nights,
the vineyard's water needs, have been light.
Over watering will cause unwanted growth
in the canopy, and this can can delay ripening.
We also take this opportunity
to remove grape clusters that are not maturing with the rest of the crop.
This also includes any second crop.
Second crop is the newly formed grape clusters in the canopy.
We are entering the beginning of the end,
of the vines annual cycle.
It’s no longer about the health of the vine,
but the health of the berries.
So, when you look out at
the Sonoma Vineyards this time of year,
and you see the vineyard looking a little pale,
with some yellow leaves, remember,
that is what makes our wines so special.
It takes a "Little Stress"
to create a world-class, wine grape.
This holds true for the vines and the grower!
Quote of the week:
“It’s not the stress that kills us, it is our reaction to it.”
