Happy Fourth of July
On July 4, 2020, the United States of America
will be celebrating its 244th Birthday.

Until the Colonies declared their independence,
 they were under the rule
of the British Empire.

The Declaration of Independence
was approved by the thirteen colonies
on July 4, 1776,
at which point
the United States became a country.

We Have Had An Exceptional Fruit-Set!

Vintage 2020’s, Spring was a bit unusual
when it came to the weather;
wet then hot and windy.

Fortunately for us and the wine consumers,
the unseasonal weather,
did not hurt our flowering process.

The Setword to describe a successful
flowering process,
is complete.

We experienced very little shatter in the vineyards and Vintage 2020 looks as if it will be another successful year here in Sonoma.

Shatter is a word we use to describe when the grape flower is disrupted and does
not self-pollinate

Now that Summer is officially here,
all we need is some continuing warm weather
to have a normal harvest date.

Right now, we are about
two weeks behind a normal season.

Shatter is a word we use to describe when the grape flower is disrupted
and does not self-pollinate.

Summer In The Vineyard

July and August are the months,
when the energy and growth moves towards maturing the grapes.

Even though the grapevines have
some foliar growth this time of year,
most of the energy goes directly towards
the newly formed grape clusters.

What is going on

in the vineyards this week?

The answer is, a lot!

More clearly, our major task is removing the lateral growth in the fruit zone and opening the grape clusters to filtered light, which helps them grow.

At the same time, we are removing unwanted trunk suckers and hedging the tops of the vines.

This pass also includes, removing some fruit from short clusters, that will struggle to ripen its fruit.

Harvest is about 80 days away, so it is important to direct most of the energy into fruit growth.

Verasion (when the grapes turn from green to red, or to translucent in white varieties)
is about a month away.

Even though it is a little too early to tell,
Vintage 2020, seems to be on target to be a normal crop year. Worrying about a bumper crop, is not going to be an issue.
