Zinfandel of the Month –  For August 2020

2018 Ridge Vineyards Zinfandel Pagani Ranch

Tom Lee of the
 Zinfandel Chronicles

My rating: 96 points.

Bright crimson in color. 14.9% ABV. 84% Zinfandel, 9% Alicante Bouschet and 7% Petite Sirah. Gorgeous nose of red fruits, peach and pepper. Medium body with mouth watering acidity. Bright and juicy. Boysenberry, raspberry liqueur, earth and pepper on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish.
Every bit as good as the the stunning 2017 Pagani.
Best over the next 4-6 years

Release date: September 1, 2020

When I first became interested in Zinfandel the buzz was always around the Three R's of Zinfandel: Ravenswood, Rosenblum and Ridge. 25 years later Ridge is still at the top of its game, turning out single vineyard Zinfandel from some of California's most precious vineyards.

I chose this wine as Zinfandel of the Month because the 2017 version was absolutely breathtaking the 2018 vintage is one of the best
Zinfandel vintages in recent memory.

Pagani Ranch is just off Highway 12 in the Glen Ellen area of Sonoma County.  Angela and Felice Pagani came to Sonoma County from Italy, purchased the property and planted the vineyard in the early 1900’s.
In addition to Ridge the fruit goes to
Carlisle, Seghesio, Biale & Bedrock

We carry a variety of E.B.Stone soils,
plant foods & fertilizers,
as well as aeration Grow Bags.

“Crush 2020”

has officially begun in Sonoma

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Normally there are three grape harvest seasons
in Sonoma.
The first, is the sparkling wine harvest.
The second is the
early ripening still wine harvest
for the early ripening varieties,
such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Followed by the later ripening still wine harvest, such as, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel, and a few others.
“Vintage 2020”
is going to be different.
As Normal, the sparkling wine harvest began in early August.
The two varieties that make up most of the sparkling wine are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
These vineyards are harvested earlier
than still wines, due to the fact that
“Champagne”  does not require the
high Brix Level, (sugar content)
that still wines do.
Our second harvest season is, the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir harvest,
that are used for still wine production.
S
till wine, is the term for any
non-sparkling table wine.
Due to a hot growing season,
many of these vineyards are reaching maturity earlier than normal.
For those of us living in wine country, I'm sure you have noticed that August has been extremely hot.
The early maturity of the grapes,
along with the wildland fires, has helped to make the decision for many wineries, to harvest.
Normally, we would allow the grapes in the vineyards, to rest in the California Sun
(which we call “Hang Time”) before harvest.
However, with the risk of smoke taint,
many vineyards may be harvested early,
to prevent damage to the quality of the grapes, due to “Mother Nature’s Wrath”.
So, in 2020,
the second and third harvests will all be combined.
“Vintage 2020,” will be known in the history books as the year,
the grapes wanted out of the vineyards and into a bottle as soon as possible.
Let’s face it, 2020 has not been
a great year, for almost anything!
 Hopefully our wines will change that.
Since many of us enjoy wines that are lower in alcohol,  maybe this will be a vintage to remember in a good way?
Only time will tell.
Quote of the week:
"Do not measure success by today's harvest.  Measure success by the seeds you plant today."
It's never too early to begin prepping for harvest.
