“Vintage 2019” harvest is in full swing!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Vintage 2019” harvest is in full swing.

We will be harvesting for another two to three weeks and with great weather, should have an
end of harvest date, around October 15th.

Most of our Chardonnays and Pinot Noir grapes
are harvested and in the winery’s hands.

We will continue harvesting the Merlots, Cabernet
Sauvignons, Zinfandels and other later 
varietals.

 

 With that said, our harvest season
has been a bit unusual. 
It has been more condensed than those in the past. 

Typically, we would harvest the
Chardonnays and Pinot Noir’s first,
then move on to Merlot and Zinfandel. 

Then lastly, we finish off with the later varieties, like Cabernet Sauvignon.
 
However, this harvest has been different, in that in
 some cases, we harvested Chardonnay
and Cabernet Sauvignon on the same day!


 

 

This year, the question is...

why did all the grapes become ripe at the

same time?

   

The answer is a little complicated.

Our harvest was condensed due to our marketplace and styles of wine being produced.

In the past, many later varieties were harvested with a very high sugar content (Brix).

This year these late varieties were harvested sooner  at a lower sugar level to achieve producing
a wine with less alcohol.

Sugar is converted into alcohol by yeast
in the winemaking process.


 



 

In many cases, by picking earlier,
this sped up the harvest for the normally later varieties, by two weeks; 
placing them in the same timeframe
as the earlier varieties.

 


 

Another factor, is the recent hot weather, which ripened all the wine grapes quicker than normal,
without the luxury of having a hang-time window.

In other words;
“When the wine-grapes were ready to harvest,
we needed to harvest.”

The next few weeks will be crucial, to finish up harvesting all the wine-grapes, for “Vintage 2019.”

What we need now is...
some cool dry days and some sleep.
