Cook Vineyard Management                        Newsletter
“Vintage 2019” harvest,
will officially end for

Cook Vineyard Management,

early on October 24th

                       Our last
vineyard to be picked
                         will be
Cabernet Sauvignon.

That will officially end our Eight Week harvest.

We only a
two-day break, during a short rain event,
in the month of September.

It has been awhile since we have had to think about the grapes on the vines.

Farming grapes in Sonoma comes with many rewards and a few challenges.

One challenge is that this time of year
erosion control.

Erosion control is an ongoing
maintenance issue.

Every year we
“button-up” the vineyards to ensure that winter run-off does not cause erosion and remove our beloved soil from our vineyards.

Fortunately, there are many tools available to achieve a successful erosion control plan.

In most flat vineyards it is as simple as applying
cover crop.

In vineyards with some slope to it,
they are a little more challenging.

Understanding Sheet Flow is key.

Sheet flow allows the runoff to evenly
disperse over
a large area, moving slowly,
sedimentation behind.

This can be achieved by installing
Straw Wattles (compacted rice straw in a long burlap sock)
and or spreading

We use rice straw, because it is weed free.

In some extreme area’s,

jute netting (burlap woven blankets)
are applied over the straw.

In these
extreme cases, the seed will be applied,
then the straw and finished up with the jute netting.

There are many different steps in erosion control,
however, one of the most critical steps,
is making sure that all
rain-water leaving the vineyard
is clean and free of

sedimentation barriers or
sedimentation ponds in front of water outlets, is key.

One example would be installing a
straw wattle
around the outlet, as well as
 outlets designed to keep
the sedimentation in place.

Farming grapes is a year-round responsibility

and keeping the vineyards healthy

adds to our health and quality of life.

Quote of the Week:
To work a vineyard, you need a lot of guts to do that.  To go out there and work all year, you almost feel that these people talk to the grapes. Wine is a lifestyle, and you can talk about it for ages.
It's a passion, but it's not something I can do on a daily basis.

“Olive Sonoma”

Arbequina Olive Oil,
just so happens to be David Cook’s and my favorite.

Won a  Gold AWARD  at the

2019 World Olive Oil Competition

“Olive Sonoma” Arbequina, is a well-balanced olive oil,
with tasting sensations of Almond, Celery, Chamomile and Black Pepper

Arbequina goes well drizzled over meats to bring out their intense flavors.
It’s also great in pesto (I use it in mine) and salad dressings.

Interesting fact:  A customer recommends using Arbequina for baking.  She told me that she substitutes it for butter and used it in her Brownie Recipe!
