The Annual Cycle Of A Grapevine

As you drive around in the wine country,
you will notice that the grape vines
are slowly entering dormancy.

The grapevine leaves are turning fall colors and slowly dying. This is part of the annual cycle of a grapevine.

Grapevines are deciduous.

In simple terms, in the winter,
hey lose their leaves and go to sleep.

Dormancy is triggered by many different factors.
Until we have a hard frost, some vineyards will be at different stages than others.

Literally overnight, the grapevines will all enter
that final stage of dormancy, and lose their leaves.

So, where do the grape-leaves go?

Grapevine leaves will fall to the ground and decompose.

They will incorporate into the soil
and become part of the vineyard’s terroir.

During this time of year,
our attention goes from the vines to the soil.

“Erosion Control"

Erosion control, is an ongoing maintenance issue.

Every year after harvest, we “button-up” the vineyards.

Before the winter rains, is when we install and begin our erosion control measures.

There are many tools available to achieve
a successful erosion control plan.

In most flat vineyards it is as simple as
applying a cover crop.

In other vineyards with some slope it is a little more challenging.

Understanding sheet flow is key,
as this allows the runoff to evenly disperse,
moving slowly, over a large area,
leaving sedimentation behind.

This can be achieved by installing Straw wattles (compacted rice straw in a long burlap sock)
and or spreading straw.
We use rice straw because it is weed free.

In some extreme area’s jute netting
(burlap woven blankets) are applied over the straw.

In these extreme cases the seed will be applied,
then straw and finished up with the jute netting.

There are many different steps in erosion control,
but one of the most important is making sure that all water leaving the area is clean and free of sedimentation.

Installing sedimentation barriers or ponds before water outlets is key. One example would be installing a straw wattle around the outlet and/or have designed outlets to keep the sedimentation in place.

Maintaining a vineyard is a full-time job!

In the Spring we tend the vines, the Fall we harvest, and, in the Winter, we protect it from the
Hard Winter Rains.

It’s the cycle of life in a Vineyard...

“Olive Sonoma”

Arbequina Olive Oil,
just so happens to be David Cook’s and my favorite.

Won a  Gold AWARD  at the

2019 World Olive Oil Competition

“Olive Sonoma” Arbequina, is a well-balanced olive oil,
with tasting sensations of Almond, Celery, Chamomile and Black Pepper

Arbequina goes well drizzled over meats to bring out their intense flavors.
It’s also great in pesto (I use it in mine) and salad dressings.

Interesting fact:  A customer recommends using Arbequina for baking.  She told me that she substitutes it for butter and used it in her Brownie Recipe!
