How Do The High Temperatures

Affect The Vineyards?

Last week the “Vine Country”
saw some hot temperatures!

Nothing like the Sahara Desert,
but temperatures reaching
high 90's to the low 100 degrees
(and not cooling down at night)
made for a few uncomfortable days!

Every year is different,
however, it is not unusual to have
these hotter than normal days in
the late Spring and throughout the Summer.

Hot Days And Warm Nights In The Vineyards
So how does the high heat
affect the vineyards?

The answer is a bit confusing,
and the question should really be;
how long does it take a vine
to acclimate to the hotter weather?

Vines are like humans, in that they need to
acclimate to their environment.

The short answer to the questions is,
the high temperatures don’t affect a prepared, manicured vine
that has the proper canopy management.

As well the vines will shut down after
90 degrees, which stops
all the growth and energy into the vine,
and can be more of a delaying process for growth, than a good growing day.

We would rather not see
any over 90-degree days,
but since we aren't in charge,
we must deal with what Mother Nature brings.

Properly Manicured Canopy, Protecting The Fruit Zone

Right now, we are  continuing the removal of the lateral growth surrounding the fruit zone.

Our main job this time of year, is to prepare the canopy to allow filtered light into the fruit zone.
Too much and we sun-burn the fruit.
Too little we can cause shading,
which can create another set of problems;
such as the higher risk of disease and unhealthy conditions
in the fruit zone.

Grape Cluster Development

The next few weeks will be crucial for
 cluster development as the
hot weather could sunburn the grapes,
if not protected by the canopy.

Because of this, we only remove some laterals and keep as much as we can,
to help shade the fruit from the suns UV rays.

Once they get acclimated, then we will come by and remove more, depending on the weather.

At the same time, we are raising the catch wires
on the trellis, to help support the shoots,
newly formed vertical growth.

Even though we were a little behind,
so far it seems like
“Vintage 2020” is off to a great start,
for this growing season.

However, we must keep on our toes
for what is coming next
and be prepared for
that unusual weather pattern,
or whatever Mother Nature throws our way!
