Cook Vineyard Management

Sunday, February 2nd is a Big Day!

There is this "Little Football Game,"
that will be playing on televisions
around the well as
an appearance by Punxsutawney Phil.

I would not take the big squirrel’s prediction to heart;

 the groundhog has been correct,

less than 40% of the time,
in this 133-year-old tradition

Flipping a coin is at least a 50-50 chance!

With that said, like last year, we hope the little furry creature, is right on mark!
We need more rain before winter ends.

To date, we are at average rainfall for the year...
but more is always welcomed.

So, what if we don’t get
six more weeks of winter rains...

How will that affect
“Vintage 2020?"

Our grapevines are dormant this time of year.

Rain or shine, the vines could not care less, however,  the lack of rain and snowfall can cause significant issues in our arid climate

We rely on water storage for our existence and the winter rains help fill our aquifers, deep in the ground, where most of our water comes from.

Winter Rains, saturate the vineyard, which helps to keep the soil moist throughout the spring.

This allows us to hold off irrigating the vineyards
until May or June;
with some vineyards, even being dry-farmed.

Without more significant rainfall, we could also see an earlier than normal bud-break.

Timing is everything!
Based on the soil temperature,
our dormant vines become active.
Wet soil is colder than dry soil,
and wet soil can delay bud-break.

Bud-break is when the vine begins its annual growth cycle and green tissue emerges.

Early bud-break, would make the
grapevines susceptible to potential March frosts,
which could inflict major damage.

Quote of the Week:

“Climate is what we expect, weather is what we get.”

                                                     -Mark Twain
