We Have Had An Exceptional Fruit-Set!

“Vintage 2020” is continuing
with its slower than normal pace,
and this year’s flowering stage is no exception.

Flowering, normally occurs
in the Middle of May,
however, this year it lingered into the middle of June.

The great news is,
we have had an amazing Fruit-Set.
The weather during this event made it a success;
just a little later than normal.

Budding, Flowering and Fruit-Set Process of a Grape Vine
Do Grape Vines Need Bees

for the Pollination Process?

Unlike many plants, grapevines self-pollinate and do not need bees to help with this process.

Every grape in a cluster will flower,
in a matter of a two-week period in the vineyard.

Timing is everything, heavy wind, rain
or a nutrient deficient vine
can disrupt the flowering process,
which is necessary in the formation of a grape.

The average grapevine has 24 grape clusters

With an average of 60 grapes per cluster

This equals 1,440 flowering occurrences
per grapevine.

In a ten-acre vineyard
(one thousand vines per acre)
this would be around 14 million occurrences.

Growing high-quality wine grapes,
is all about balance.
If there is a weather event like rainheavy wind,
or a nutrient deficient vine,
this can disrupt some of the flowering processes (shatter),
and interrupt the balance.
Shatter is a word we use in the vineyard,
when a vine(s)
doesn’t have a successful flowering.

Percent of shatter,
describes the percentage of berries
on a cluster, vine or vineyard, that were unsuccessful during the flowering process.

Hens and Chicks

Another issue can be,
larger than normal berries.

If a cluster has less berries on it,
this can change
the skin (tannin), to juice ratio.

If we are lucky, and there is zero percent shatter;  the cluster will form perfectly,
with some big and some a little,
or smaller
berries, which is great for quality
(we call this Hens and Chicks).

Every year we remove
fruit from the vine (Drop Crop)

Having the ability to pick the best clusters,
will ensure a higher quality wine.

If there is a lot of shatter,
there will not be as many choices.

Having a successful fruit-set,
is crucial to this task.

What is going on in the vineyards this week?

We are continuing
to remove laterals in the fruit-zone.

This will allow filtered light
onto our newly formed berries.

The vine’s foliar growth will slow down
and concentrate most of the plants energy
into the berries.

This is the time that irrigation
is most important
as a hydrated vine is a healthy vine.

If there is overwatering taking place the vine,
it will continue with unwanted foliar growth.
