Cook Vineyard Management

Farming Comes with
Challenges and Blessings.

Every year, farming comes with
its challenges and blessings.

This year has already bestowed a blessing upon us,
in the form of

Currently, we are at an average rainfall
(with over 10” of rain)
and a healthy snowpack in the Sierras.

Last Thursday alone, the Sonoma Valley got almost an inch of rain.

So how does this effect the vineyards?

There is no substitute for winter rains,
to aid in the growth cycle of the vineyards.

In normal rainfall years, when we have water-saturated soil, we don’t start irrigating
until late May and often into early June.

This not only conserves water,
but saves the expense of pumping in the water.

Rainwater is acidic from natural acids
(sulfuric and nitric acids) and leaches the soil.

Our cover crops stay healthier and robust
until tilled into moist soil

Due to the recent, past fires in our region,
we must be mindful of erosion concerns.

Too much rain too quickly is always a concern;
but for now, we will hopefully be blessed,
with some dry weather.

This affords the soil, the opportunity to absorb the water  and for things to dry up,
before the next round of wet weather.

It is all about balance.

There is a balance in nature,
and water is
essential to life.

Our hope is, that we continue to get more
precipitation, before Mother Nature
slams the rain door in a few months.

Only time will tell how our winter will finish off...
but so far, so good!

"Rain is grace; rain is the sky descending to the earth; without rain, there would be no life."
