On September 2nd, 2020
we had the full moon,

known as the Corn Moon.

A fun fact; the “Harvest Moon” was called
“Full Corn Moon” by Native Americans
and signaled the time to harvest the corn

Every full moon has a name, depending on
when it occurs during the year.

For instance, the “Harvest Moon,”
is the closest full moon,
to the autumn equinox,
which this year occurs on October 1st, 2020.

For those of us in the vineyards,
it is a special full moon,
because it represents the time of year
we have all been waiting for...
“The Crush” (Harvest).

The full moon is especially welcome
during our night picks,
as it creates more natural light than normal.

How is “Vintage 2020” harvest going?

Our harvest season this year,
has been very unusual!

At first we were ahead of schedule;
then the weather cooled down (especially at night), putting us behind schedule.

With the very hot weather over the
Labor Day Weekend,
this put us right were we should be!

This year, with the pandemic,
the unusual weather patterns
and the smoke from the wild fires,
will make this growing season,
one for the text books!

Right now, with few exceptions,
mostly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir
are being picked.

Most of us will be done picking the Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs
 in the next two weeks
and be moving into the
Zinfandels, Merlots, Syrah’s.

Some of the later red varieties
like Cabernet Sauvignon,
may need to hang around for a while to sugar up.

This term is used to describe,
the balance between the
natural sugar and PH balance of a wine grape.

Most wines have a harvest target for sugar
that will be converted to alcohol (Brix).

“Crush 2020,” Harvest,
will continue until the middle of October.

The bulk of the vineyards will be harvested
over the next three or four weeks.

Only time will tell,
but the warm dry Autumn or Indian Summer,
that we are experiencing,
should make for some great vintage year!

Happy Harvest!!
