Wind can be a blessing!

Lately, Sonoma has experienced a lot of wind events.

Even though it is normal for this time of year, it can be annoying to some.

Wind is caused by air flowing from high pressure to low pressure.

Since the Earth is rotating, the air does not flow directly from high to low pressure.

Rather it is deflected to the right, in the Northern Hemisphere
and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere.

So, the wind flows mostly around the high and low-pressure areas.

Do the winds affect the vineyards?

In the world of viticulture, wind can be a blessing,
as long as it isn’t high wind gusts,
that could damage the young tender shoots.

positive about wind, is that it helps dry the vineyard’s soil.

This will allow us to get into the vineyards with tractors
to spray our first fungicide of the year
and mow the tall grasses.

The wind also helps in keeping the powdery mildew levels down.

Another positive about wind,

is that the concern for frost is removed from the equation.

Frost (temperatures below 32 degrees) can be devastating.

Surprisingly enough, “Vintage 2020”
has not experienced a frost so far this year,
and the 10-day outlook looks as if we may not have any.

That would be a blessing.

Another benefit to farming grapes in Sonoma,
are the cool breezes we experience during our growing season.

All in all, the winds may be annoying for most of us,
but for farming grapes, it is beneficial in many ways.

For now, Mother Nature can keep the air on...
as long as it isn’t on the “high setting.”

Let it blow!

“Vintage 2020” is off to a great start,
and so far..
the wind is our friend!

Quote of the week-

“The wind blows on us all, but it's how you set your sail that makes the difference.”
