 The Recent Heat & Drizzle

  Did Not Hurt The Vineyards.

The late rains of May, combined with the unusual weather we have been experiencing
have us on a later than normal path.

Our best guess is, we are 3 to 7 days
behind a normal year.

The old saying, to describe all of the unexpected events in the agricultural world;
“That’s farming!”
Is a great way to describe this year so far.

Why will the next few weeks will be crucial to the success of this year’s crop?

The question is summed-up by one word,
Flowering.

Most of the vineyards are beginning,
or are in the flowering process (bloom).

Every grape, on every cluster
will flower and self-pollenate.

    This process can be harmed
by rain and heavy wind.

The drizzle last week, fell during the beginning of our flowering process.
So the great news is, that almost all vineyards go through a slow flowering process, or in stages.

Not all the grapes flower at the same time. Flowering can take up to three weeks to complete.

Set is best described, as the moment a grape finishes a successful pollination.

The next few weeks will be crucial and hopefully
Mother Nature sends us some much-needed
Grape-Growing weather.

Grape-Growing weather is a high of 90 degrees during the day with a low temperature of
60 degrees at night,
and no rain or high wind events.

Over the next few weeks, our crews will be busy
tucking the growing shoots
into the wires
and removing unwanted suckers on the trunks and fruiting zone,
that may have emerged
after the original suckering pass.

We will be continuing our fungicide program,
which is another crucial step in the success of “Vintage 2020.”

After all of the rain and cool weather we have experienced this spring,
a warm to hot summer,
should be welcome change.

And good for the grapes to boot!
