How can we protect the vineyards, 

without harming the deer?


Most vineyards have deer fencing, which keep
the deer out, during the growing season.


Our industry has done a great job,
of allowing the deer to move throughout the valley, during the dormant season.

 

 Where possible, we suggest making pathways between the fences,
to allow free movement of our four-legged friends, between fenced vineyards

It is also important, to make sure,
that all the deer are out of the vineyard,
before closing the gates for the growing season.


This is better for the deer and the vineyard!

 
On The Outside, Looking In!



With all this warm dry weather, “Vintage 2020”
bud break, could be as early as March 5th. 

We are hoping that it will end up being closer to the normal time of March 15th, as there is always the risk of a cold snap.   


Bud Break is triggered by warm soil temperatures; wet soil has a lower temperature than dry soil.


Deer damage, can be a huge issue in our vineyards, during bud break.

Bud-Break is best described as, part of a wine grapes growth cycle, that signals the end of dormancy.

Bud break: the action of buds swelling and the signal of new growth and the arrival of spring.


 
               Deer love to eat the small shoots, 
    which can cause extensive damage to the vine.

 
Even if you don’t see a deer around,
the moment the buds push through,
the deer will come!


 

Where a deer fence is not practical,
there are few less viable options.

Many vineyard owners have experimented
with noise makers and sprinklers,
set to motion sensors.

 

There are also products,
made from the urine of deer predators
that can be applied in the vineyard;
however, we have not had much success with any of these options!


 

In the long run we have two options:
build a deer fence,
or closely monitor the vineyard during bud-break.

 

The deer have a place in our valley's
balance of nature.
 

 


    Hopefully, they only take what they need,
and move on.

 

 Once the vineyards grow into lush vines,
the deer are
not as big of a threat,
in causing fatal damage to the vines.

 

 
With that said,
it is best to have a deer free vineyard!

(with over 75 year old Mother Vinegar, from Ig Vella)
As a group, we will make a fresh Creme Fraiche, then a selection of Vinaigrettes & Sauces with Creme Fraiche

Buttermilk, Sour Cream & Kefir & Kefir Soda with Spring fruits
As a group, we will make a fresh Buttermilk, Sour Cream and Kefir. Then we will make a Kefir Spritzer with a variety of fresh Spring Fruits.

Crème de Ricotta & Poached Salmon
As a group, we will make Crème de Ricotta, then poach fresh salmon in the whey from the Ricotta

Chèvre, Crème Fraiche & Fromage Blanc with local honey tasting.
As a group, we will make Chèvre, Crème Fraiche & Fromage Blanc and taste a variety of local honeys.

Feta Three Ways with fresh pressed harvest grape juice
As a group, we will make Feta from Cow's Milk, Goat's Milk and Sheep's Milk, plus add flavors including Peppercorns, Oregano and Olives.  We will also press grapes from a local vineyard, for fresh juice.

Saturday, 10-17-2020                          
Pumpkins stuffed with Maple Crème de Ricotta
As a group, we will make Crème de Ricotta, then season with fresh herbs and stuff, pumpkins and squash
 
Saturday, 11-21-2020                 

Sage Cheese Curds
As a group, we will make a fresh cheese curd and season with fresh and dried sage.
 
Saturday, 12-12-2020

Cheese, Chocolate Truffles, three ways!
 As a group, we will make Chèvre, Fromage Blanc and a blend of Chèvre/Crème.
Fromage Blanc and coate with dark, milk and white chocolate, along with sprinkles and spices. Each guest will make truffles to enjoy and or take home.
