A Story of Perseverance!

Self-belief, hard work and perseverance in a person have always been known to work wonders.  If you believe in yourself, no challenge can stop you from achieving what you aim for. Today's feature story is about one such individual who is an example of what determination can earn you!

Savita Hiregoudra, born in a middle-class family, grew up with four sisters and one brother.  As soon as she completed her first year of Pre University Course (PUC), she was married off.  But she did not drop out. She completed her PUC 2nd year.  But, because of family issues, she couldn't go to college to earn her bachelor's degree.
“I used to think, what is the use even if I try to get a degree. What will I do with it! But, a voice in my head always pushed me to get past the odds and get the degree.” Though she did not have a strong source of support for continuing education, her determination was all she needed to pave the path for herself despite all challenges.

“I completed my BA, MA and D.Ed through distance education while managing my household, exams and assignments. But, after my MA results I was confused again about what next. My life and its timelines were not the same as others in my class!” She lets out a sigh, but continues with zeal, “One day I met an old lady at the hospital who went to study after her husband’s demise and that reminded me of ‘There is no age limit for learning’. Meeting her made my belief in myself come back.”
“I just wanted to work after earning my degree. I got to know about SiV from a SiV Cluster Head. But I was rejected in my first round of interview. I couldn't speak in English at all. I was devastated. But, I got a second chance. He asked me to come prepared for the interview a second time and this time I got in!”

“I never thought I could teach English. I was very under confident during the initial trainings. But, now I am confident. I am happy about the work. During last year’s graduation ceremony one of the SDMC members mentioned that this center is almost like an English Medium School and that was one of my happiest moments.”

Savita continues to work with us as a Community Resource Person in Suganhalli and continues to inspire us every day!

And with this story we all hope, Savita has inspired you to nurture and build your perseverance and grit that we need to make the next year a success! And on this note, we at SiV wish you a very Happy New Year! May your next year be full of joy and learning!

Leaving a high-flying job in consulting, Angela Lee Duckworth took a job teaching math to seventh graders in a New York public school. She quickly realized that IQ wasn't the only thing separating the successful students from those who struggled. Here, she explains her theory of "grit" as a predictor of success.
 Happy New Year!
