Promoting awareness and prevention of GBS disease in babies before birth through early infancy

October is Prenatal-onset GBS Disease Recognition Month, as well as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.

This month is a unique time to recognize the health outcomes that can occur for unborn babies due to GBS and also to remember the many babies whose lives have ended all too soon due to any cause. Being aware of these experiences can guide us all to promote healthier outcomes for all babies!

Prenatal-onset GBS Disease Recognition Month

There are three types of GBS disease (prenatal-onset, early-onset, and late-onset) but prenatal-onset is often overlooked or not recognized, which discounts the thousands of babies who are miscarried, stillborn, or born already sick each year due to being infected by GBS in the womb.

We want to make sure that prenatal-onset GBS disease is recognized and that more pregnant women and health care professionals become aware that pregnancy is a distinct time period in which babies can be infected by GBS.

GBSI has identified several knowledge-based strategies which may help reduce the harm caused to unborn babies by GBS.

The WAVES Study

Introducing The Waves Study (Ways to Avoid Various Elements of Susceptibility)! We here at Group B International want to identify the gaps in care and communication surrounding GBS disease.

To do this we need your help! We are asking both mothers who have had a baby infected with GBS and those who have not to share their experiences in this survey if they have conceived on or after January 1, 2003. Please share the link gbs-intl.org/waves with your contacts and social media. Together we can wave goodbye to GBS disease!
