MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Reading Foundations for Future Opportunities
The ability to read is an essential skill for success in school and later in life.  Research has shown that children who develop early literacy skills gain an advantage that multiplies with every passing year.  For many reasons, poverty can be a significant hurdle in the development of these skills, which puts children from low-income families at a disadvantage when it comes to academic success and post-secondary opportunities.

The child poverty rate in Memphis is 39% and three out of four third-graders in Memphis do not read at grade levelThese two statistics mean that a great number of the third-graders in our community will quite likely be hindered from achieving their full potentiality in life – a fact that will have a significant future impact on our entire community.

We believe that this is unacceptable.  We’re here to close the gap in language and literacy access, especially for our community’s most vulnerable children, and create brighter prospects for students, families, and our city as a whole.

ALLMemphis provides teachers and literacy coaches with the skills and tools to implement a research-based, data-driven program for helping children learn the foundations of reading. By doing this, we hope to increase student retention in future grades, improve graduation rates and college-readiness, and ultimately advance the social, cultural, and economic development of our city.

In this inaugural edition of our e-newsletter, we invite you to get to know us and our wholehearted enthusiasm for the work that we do.  We look forward to working with you to ensure that ALL children in our city have a solid foundation for future success.

Toward a fully literate society,
Krista Johnson, Executive Director

MEET THE ALLMEMPHIS TEAM

Dr. Krista Johnson, Co-Founder and Executive Director, has spent the past decade bridging her experience in theory and research to the clinical world of reading remediation. Inspired by a vision of a fully literate community, she strives to address inequity in access to language and literacy instruction by making the Orton-Gillingham method available to ALL children in Memphis.
Co-Founder and Director of Programs Michelle Gaines builds on her eight years of experience in education by leading and managing our teacher trainings, literacy coach mentorships, and individual remediation programs. Like Krista, a shared aspiration for community-wide literacy motivates her in making Orton-Gillingham work for ALL students in the classroom.
Megan Weinstein brings her dedication to equity, collaboration, and results to our team as the Director of Evaluation, driving our strategy for data collection, evaluation, and actionability and building strategic data partnerships.  She loves being able to use her skills in an organization that truly makes a difference in kids’ lives.
Clifford Stockton’s passion for education, student support, and educator development is a perfect fit for his role as the Partner School Specialist working directly with teachers and school leaders to provide data-driven literacy results.  He also works one-on-one with students in the classroom and is especially interested in helping to expand our approach into more public schools.
Our Program Support Specialist Carl Schneiderdraws on his experience in the classroom and as a community organizer fighting for educational justice in his work at ALLMemphis.  He greatly enjoys his work connecting schools with a proven literacy approach in order to promote education equity.
NEW SCHOOL PARTNERS WANTED!
Take your school’s literacy program to the next level with ALLMemphis!
We are now accepting new school partners for the 2019-2020 school year. ALLMemphis trains teachers and literacy coaches to use a multisensory structured literacy curriculum and approach for systematically providing scholars with the building blocks needed for reading and spelling success.

In addition to training, our three-year school partnership model includes an intensive year-long mentorship (including teacher observations, feedback, and monthly professional development), with continued check-ins and support throughout the three-year partnership so that teachers and administrators have the data and feedback they need to drive results. Contact Krista Johnson at 901-302-9139 to find out how we can help you unlock student potential.
