Careers Newsletter
August 2018 - Term 3 - Issue 1
We would like to share with you information about upcoming events and activities that our students have been involved in during the past term.
Dates for your Calendar: University Open Days
Visiting the university campus on Open Day is a great way to learn more about whether the courses and organisation are the right choice for your child.  If you are unable to make the Open Day, you can visit the campus any other time and talk to a community liaison manager.  You can get in touch with the university directly or ask us in the careers office for contact details.
Free Buses are available to the University of Auckland Open Day.  Seats are limited so you need to register here as soon as possible.

Careers Expo

Our Expo at the end of last term was a big success.  We had nearly 40 training organisations visiting the school to inform students about careers and study options. Please keep talking with your students at home about what they learnt during the Expo, as the time for making choices for 2019 is coming up quickly.
Mentor Day – August 21st

The Careers team will be available from 9am to 3.30pm to talk with you and your student about their future plans.  Please drop by to see us in the Careers Department during the day either before or after your appointment with your Mentor.
Scholarships for Tertiary Study
Tertiary study will be Fees-Free in 2019, but there are still many costs involved.  Fortunately, there are also scholarships available to assist.
Y13 students have been given information about the major university scholarships and this is also available on the university websites.  Closing dates for these scholarships are in just a few weeks.
However, there are many other scholarships with varying closing dates still available.   Many are listed on the university websites and students can also access the GivMe Database via the student portal, which has information about hundreds of other scholarships.  These scholarships are not just for the high academic achievers, but also for students with special circumstances, such as financial need, disability, refugee status or first in family to attend university.
Please encourage your students to apply for scholarships to support their studies.

Spirit of Adventure and Outward Bound Scholarships

The Mt Wellington Foundation provides our school with scholarships for students who live in the Trust area to undertake an adventure of a lifetime on the Spirit of New Zealand sail training ship or at Outward Bound in the Marlborough Sounds. These outdoor education experiences are generally for Year 12 students and helps to build their confidence and team leadership skills.

Quentin Stephens recently went on the Outward Bound course and came back full of enthusiasm and motivation.  He was pushed out of his comfort zone with a range of physical outdoor challenges and learnt how to lead and get the best out of everyone in a team.  He says it was the best 21 days of his life and he’d highly recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity.

Hannah Pepe, Jessica O’Brien and Carissa Uaea have all undertaken ten day voyages on the Spirit of New Zealand this year.  They have not only learned how to sail a ship and made friends with other students, but also learned important life lessons along the way.  “I am positive this experience has made me the person I want to be”. (Jessica O’Brien)

If your student is interested in undertaking one of these voyages in 2019, then they can make an application at the Careers Office.
