Week 3 of this term was Cook Island Language week. The theme for this year was ‘Taku rama, taau toi: ora te Reo" | "My Torch, Your Adze: The Language Lives". Congratulations to Casey Mano’o, Stephanie Ibarra, Analii Sipa and Claren Nookura for your organisation and outstanding performances during Friday lunch time.

Meitaki ma'ata.

Blessing and reopening of Refurbished E Block and Open Expo
This term has also seen the blessing and re-opening of our recently refurbished “E Block”.  This has been part of a two-year process, and I hope you will agree that the results are first class - our staff and students are very much looking forward to using the spaces that have been created.
Following the blessing and reopening, we also held our Open Expo for prospective students in this space. This was a fantastic event, with hospitality and food provided by our students and the opportunity for parents and Year 8 students to meet with our teachers and see the programmes we offer. Enrolments for 2020 are currently being accepted. Please note the following important dates if you are looking to enrol at Edgewater College for next year:

  • In-Zone Applications due Wednesday 28 August
  • Out-of-Zone Applications close on Wednesday 4 September
  • Out-of-Zone Ballot takes place on Wednesday 11 September
  • Out-of-Zone applicants ballot results emailed /posted by Friday 13 September
  • Enrolment Interview days – by appointment on Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7 November
Our Mentor day for parents/caregivers and students is also being held in this block on Thursday 22 August so this is a good opportunity for you as parents to see the upgrade.

Community Consultation
It is also that time of year when we actively try to seek information from you, our community about how we are doing as a school and target areas for improvement in the future.

As with last year we are offering this survey in both digital form via the link below, or as a paper copy that you can complete and drop in to the school office. These paper copies will be distributed to students on the 19th August.
Link for survey:
The other alternative is to complete the survey online / or on paper when you come in for Mentor Day on the 22nd of August – there will be a space set up for this purpose.
Your support in completing this questionnaire is very much appreciated. Both the Board of Trustees and Senior Leadership Team use this information as part of our strategic planning and we very much value your input in helping us decide “where to from here” for our school.

Book Week
Last week we also held another highly successful book week, culminating in our Book week dress up day on the Friday. I am pleased to announce I gained second place in the best dressed teacher award (just pipped at the post by a very dashing ‘Joker’ from Batman!). Our sincere thanks to our librarian Mrs Mucalo for her organisation of such an inspiring and fun week for our students and staff.

As part of our mid-year analysis of NCEA data we have been looking at attendance rates across the school.  In general the average attendance rate is very good at 88%, however ideally this would be sitting around 95% and this is our target for the remainder of the year. What we also know is that students who attend for the full school year, have significantly better results in both NCEA and the EC Junior Diploma – our pass rate for learners with good attendance who attend throughout the year is over 90% at all year levels.
To meet this 95% target we do need your support. We understand that there are genuine reasons for absence at times, such as illness. We also appreciate that sometimes trips may need to take place during term time, however, please note that for students in Years 11 to 13 this can be the difference between them passing their NCEA or not. If it is at all possible to avoid breaks during term time we would certainly appreciate your support with this.
You will also be receiving your child’s Term 3 report this week that shows your child’s attendance rate. If it is below 95% we would ask that you discuss this with your son or daughter and try to develop a plan to improve this rate over the remaining 14 weeks of school. A lot of preparation for external exams is also taking place at the moment so it is essential that students are here to get the support and teaching they need to prepare for them properly.
A reminder too please that we do need a signed note / or notification via email for all absences and lateness to school. Students are required to be here by 9.00am from Mon to Thurs and by 9.20am on Friday. Again, your support in ensuring that all students can meet these expectations is appreciated.
School diary
An essential part of our “EC Expectations” is all students being organised, on time and ready to learn. To support students with this all students were issued with a Diary at the start of this term. This is a key place you can look in to see due-dates for upcoming assessments / work that needs to be completed at home / other key information about the school year. You can also use it to communicate with a teacher or your child’s Mentor teacher if you wish to do so. If your son or daughter has misplaced their copy replacements are available from the school office for $2.00.
Measles update
As you will have seen a number of schools in our community have been affected recently by the Measles outbreak in this area. Unfortunately, we also received a confirmation on the 14th of August that one of our Itinerant Music Teachers had been diagnosed with Measles. The good news is that this teacher only had contact with 9 others on the day they were at school, and all of those members of our community were fully immunised. This means the risk of further infection is very low. All parents of students who may have been affected have been contacted.
For more information on the Measles you can go to the Auckland Regional Public Health Service website or check out the quick guide at the bottom of this newsletter.
School Policy update
Our school has been working with SchoolDocs to create a website for our policies and procedures. We are pleased to announce that the site is now live and available to our school community.
Our school now works with SchoolDocs on a subscription basis to maintain, update, and review our policies. SchoolDocs provides us with a comprehensive core set of policies which have been well researched and follow the Ministry of Education National Administration Guidelines. The policies and procedures have then been tailored to our school, and now follow a regular review process to ensure they reflect best practice, as well as legislation and Ministry guidelines.
Our board of trustees has the opportunity to view changes/additions and comment on these policies before they are implemented. For other policies, we will advise you as a school community when they are up for review and how you can take part in the review.
We invite you to visit the site at (please note that there's no "www").

Book Week
In Week 3 of this term, we celebrated Book Week, with fun activities each lunchtime in the library. Students (and Staff) solved The mystery of the Golden pen, and learned about Zine making.
They also took part in a Marvel versus DC comics mega quiz, and completed a treasure map in a library Scavenger hunt. We finished off the week with a brilliant Cosplay/Costume day.
Throughout the week, there was a ‘Design an EC Bookmark competition’ running, and we received some amazing entries.
Congratulations to all of our many winners, and a huge thank you to everyone who took part and made the week such a success.

Art Department Update
Two Edgewater College art students, Jenny Tran, and Shana Davids were nominated for the Pat Hanly Creativity Awards at the Auckland Art Gallery by their Art teacher Miss Cunningham. Each student sent in one piece of artwork and a written piece on why creativity is important in their lives.
Congratulations to both Jenny and Shana who were selected as award recipients and will attend the ceremony on the 29 August at the Auckland Art Gallery where they will receive their award and a goodie bag of art materials.  They have also been invited to partake in two all-expenses-paid art workshops with practicing artists.
The Edgewater College art department staff and students are very proud of these two students and we look forward to seeing their final work at the end of the year.
