This time of year is busy for our Year 13s, who are investigating their options for next year when they finish school. But students don’t have to wait until Year 13 before they start making plans. It is a good idea to be exploring different occupations from Year 9 so that well-informed decisions can be made by the time they are ready to leave.
There are several Open Days and Information Evenings coming up soon, which students and parents from all Year levels are welcome to attend. These are a great way to learn more about whether the courses and training organisations are the right choices for your child.
Follow this link for Calendar dates on Information Evenings and Open Days.
Year 13 students planning to go on to tertiary education should consider applying for scholarships to help cover their fees and other expenses. You can find scholarship information on the University websites and also MoneyHub, which provides links to many additional independent scholarships.
Scholarships are available for a wide range of students based not only on their grades but also their field of study, cultural background, financial need and “first in family” to attend university.
Please encourage your student to begin the application process for the major university scholarships now, as the deadlines are coming up quickly. Click here to find University application closing dates.
In Term 3, we will also be offering Year 13s the opportunity to apply for scholarships that are available to Edgewater College students from organisations such as Manukau Institute of Technology, Mt Wellington Foundation and Riverina School.
A note for our current Year 12 students: school leaver scholarship applications are based on NCEA grades gained during Year 12 at Level 2 or above, so academic achievement this year is important.
Industry Training Courses STAR and Gateway
The STAR and Gateway programme provides students with the opportunity to experience “taster” courses and gain practical work experience in the area of their choice, as well as earning NCEA credits.

Work Experience on E Block
Tari Pita has successfully completed a 10-week placement with BCITO on the E Block renovations here at school. He has earned credits and gained valuable work experience doing a job that he loves.
We have two other students also about to start on the worksite doing carpentry and painting and decorating.
