Careers Update

Term 1, Week 9
It can be daunting for students to decide on a future career or study pathway.

The Careers Team is here to help.  We support students with information and experiences to learn more about different career opportunities and prepare for the world of work.  We are always available to speak with students, and are currently in the process of interviewing all our Year 13 cohort, to ensure they have a good plan for work or further training after they leave school.

We are also here for parents and caregivers who would like more information.  You are welcome to call or meet with us to discuss pathway options for students at any level.

In this newsletter, we would like to share with you information about upcoming events and activities that our students have been involved in over the past term.
Dates for your calendar:

Industry Training Courses
STAR Courses: First Aid and Communication Skills

We started the year with two courses for our Year 12 and 13 students.  Both of these provided students with valuable workplace skills, NCEA Credits
and a worthwhile addition to their CV.
We have a few other courses coming up this year in the STAR programme, which provide a wonderful opportunity for students to gain a ‘taster’ of a career they might be interested in.  Students need to see Mrs Holmberg in the Gateway Office at the Student Centre to enrol.
Upcoming Course: Health and Safety
This course is being offered and is a requirement of anyone choosing to go mainly into the Trades & Services industry and/or work placements through Gateway, but is great for anyone at Year 12 & 13 to have on your CV. The course will occur during the first week of Term 2, so if you are interested, please see Mrs. Holmberg in the Gateway office or email

The credits on offer are below:
Spirit of Adventure and Outward Bound Scholarships

The Spirit of Adventure Trust and the Mt Wellington Foundation provide our school with scholarships for students to undertake an adventure of a lifetime on the Spirit of New Zealand sail training ship.

The Spirit of Adventure is a ten day voyage that sails around the Hauraki Gulf, leaving from Auckland.  The experience is usually for Year 12 students and helps to build confidence and team leadership skills, as well as encouraging them to push their boundaries and discover new experiences.

Any students interested in undertaking one of these voyages can make an application at the Careers Office.

Students who are fortunate to receive scholarships for this year are:

Sherydyn Macioce

Davnesh Chand

Travis Marcroft-Ryan

Faiza Kahn

Caitlin Edwards
