Principal's Report
Nau mai, haere mai

A very warm welcome to all our returning students and also to those joining our school community in 2019. We have had a very positive start to the year with a current roll of 570 students, well up on the 500 that was predicted by the Ministry of Education. Please know that we have planned for this roll growth and ensured in our planning last year that we were able to put on classes to accommodate the extra students. 

Another particular pleasing start to the year was the success of our senior students in the NCEA last year, with all senior levels achieving NCEA pass rates over 70%. Our target for the 2019 year is to move all of these pass rates to 80%+. One of our focus areas has also been to raise the proportion of students gaining their qualification at Merit or Excellence level. It was great to see 29% of all Year 11 students gained NCEA with an endorsement and again this will continue to be a target over the coming year to ensure all students are aiming for the highest qualification possible. My sincere congratulations to our senior students in 2018 – you have set an excellent standard for our current senior students to strive to continue to improve upon.
Last week we also held our inaugural Celebration of Excellence and Leadership. This was a fantastic opportunity to recognise both the Year 13 students who have been selected as student leaders for 2019, as well as the outstanding academic achievements of our senior students in attaining excellence endorsements in the NCEA in 2018. Parents of student leaders for 2019 were invited to the stage to pin on their child’s leadership badge and recognise their achievement in being selected as a student leader. Our Head Students Briana and Lionel also delivered messages of thanks to their teachers and families to acknowledge the support they have received in reaching their goals. Our excellence students were also presented with badges and certificates for their outstanding achievements. It was a lovely evening and a great opportunity to celebrate these successes as a school community.

Spirit of Adventure

Hi everyone, my name is Macauley Cunningham, Edgewater’s Board of Trustees Student Representative for 2019. As part of training for this role, the board sent me to Bluff to take part in a three-day Spirit of Adventure voyage.

On this voyage were 39 other student representatives from all over New Zealand, along with the 14 crew members required to keep the ship in action. After arriving on the ship, our cell phones were confiscated and we had to get to know each other the old-fashioned way, even if half of the bonding was quoting jokes from the internet and singing popular songs.

Our voyage took us from Bluff all the way to Stewart Island, with nice 40 km/h winds tilting us to a 45-degree angle every few minutes. I wasn’t one of them, but quite a few people got seasick. (Baked beans on toast for breakfast probably didn’t help the colour or consistency.)

Once we were anchored off Stewart Island in the Patterson Inlet, we were introduced to the wonders of deck showers and what it means to be a Student Representative. We also took part in fun activities like a two-hour hike, and some team-building exercises in our groups.

Overall, this was a great experience that taught me some valuable leadership skills, though I’m not sure I’d want to do the Bluff crossing again.

Art Department 2019
This year the Art Department will be celebrating Year 9 to 13 students achievements and trips in Art through our very own Instagram page. Scan the name tag to follow us and keep up to date with all the talented artists and events the Art Department will be having throughout the year. Each week we will try to feature at least one student’s work and there may even be opportunities for you to buy some artwork. We are very excited about this so please spread the word!
Year 13 Camp

On Wednesday the 30th of January, I had my camping gear all set and packed to go on a 3 day camp to the gorgeous Ponui island. See, I didn’t know what to expect and neither did any of the student body. Some were nervous but, most were excited. We were told it’s going to be one of the highlights of our last year and that it was the beginning of the end. 

We set off around 8.00am, heading towards Kawakawa Bay where a barge was waiting to take us to Ponui. Just around 3 hours after leaving school, we all found ourselves on the beachfront of the island, breathing in the clean air, bathing in the terribly hot heat, and smothering ourselves in sunscreen. Nevertheless, the first round of camp activities started right away after we finished setting up our tents. 

So, we were all divided into 6 different color groups- Pink, Orange, Yellow, Blue, Red, and Green. That group will be the group we stick with for the entirety of camp and every activity gives your group points. It was quite like the whanau house competition. Every day started with breakfast and sunscreen then, straight into a wide range of activities (with breaks in between of course). We sang, bonded and threw sponges at each other. At the end of it all, Orange took the win (even though Pink should’ve). Despite all the bruises and sunburns we got, we finished with a new outlook on the importance of teamwork and came out with a whole lot of memories.

To keep this short and sweet, we would also like to give the teachers and staff all our thanks. To Mr Holmes for being crazy with us and leading the activities. To Ms Minahan for all the lovely photos. To Mr and Mrs Sheahan for the wonderful food. To Ms Dawson for understanding our struggle with the heat. To Mr Samasei'a for coming along and being such an amazing support person. To Darren and Nick for the memorable evenings and the toothpaste talk. Last but, not least, we give our thanks to Miss Benjamin for organizing the whole thing and running around after us (we know we are quite a handful)- camp wouldn’t have been possible without you.

As for, the year 12s wondering if you should go on the camp or not, the answer is obviously yes. There will be things that are out of your comfort zone but, don’t be scared to try it. You will be showered with support from the teachers, staffs and most likely, your peers. Although be warned- sunshine is not all sunny and shiny. Oh and put on as much sunscreen as possible - trust us.

School Photographs
School Photographs will take place next Wednesday 20 January.

If a student wishes to have an individual photograph taken, these must be prepaid for at the school office. Each student will receive an envelope from their Mentor teacher today and this needs to be filled in and the correct money placed in the envelope and returned to the office by next Tuesday 19 February.

If a student also wants sibling photographs then please ask them to pick up an envelope from the office, fill it in and return it and the money to the office by next Tuesday 19 February.
One of the things we value as a school community is contact between home and school to ensure that all students are able to access the support needed to enable them to achieve at the highest levels possible. Please be advised that if you wish to discuss a matter regarding your child the best place to start is with an email to the teacher directly (if a classroom matter) or to your child’s Mentor teacher (for pastoral or more general matters). For more serious concerns it may be appropriate to contact the Dean and/or the Head of Department directly.
