Term 2 - Issue 3 - 4 July 2018
Principals Report
Dear Parents / Caregivers

This has been an action packed term.  We started with our 50th Anniversary Jubilee, have celebrated many memorable events such as the Wearable Arts Competition, Big Sing Festival, Readers Cup, Careers Day, the School Ball and this week many of our staff and students head off on the annual Music Tour. Over this term we have had students competing in Badminton, Basketball, Football, Hockey, Netball, Rugby and Table Tennis.  These sports only happen with the support of teachers and parents – we are very grateful for all those who volunteer and I know that our Sports Coordinator Ms Benjamin is always keen to here from those who are willing to be involved as coaches, managers and supporters.
We are now half way through the academic year for our junior students.  It is an important time to assess what has gone well so far and set goals for the remainder of the year.  To this end reports will be issued in Week 4 of next term and Mentor Day will occur on the 21st August.  I encourage you to make time on this day available to come in and discuss your child’s progress to date.
Senior students have only 13 teaching weeks left.  This week a notification of their NCEA progress to date has been sent to all parents / caregivers and I strongly encourage you to discuss this with your child.  Questions you might ask your child include:
  • How many credits have you got in total?
  • How many do you need to get NCEA this year?
  • How many do you need to gain a certificate and / or course endorsement?
  • Have you got the Literacy / Numeracy credits you need? How will you get them if you do not?
  • What subjects are going well?
  • What subjects do you need to work harder in / get further help with?
  • Do you understand the feedback and feed-forward given?
  • What revision do you need to do before your practice External exams being held in Week 9 of Term 3?
  • If they are year 13 and considering university study please discuss how they are going to meet the University Entrance requirements this year.
If your child has any queries or concerns with regard to any of these questions please encourage them to talk to their Mentor teacher and / or Dean about their progress and developing a plan to ensure they can gain their qualification this year.

Kind regards
Louise Addison

Year 9 Readers Cup
On Thursday 28 June, a team of five students represented Edgewater College at the first ever Eastern/Southern region Year 9 Readers Cup. As a team, they read a total of 6 books, and then participated in a quiz competition answering questions based on the books. Congratulations to Haydn Connell, Josh Nicol, Yalda Ahmadi, Pearl Tuala and Fae Espinosa for proudly representing our school in such a positive manner. The team would like to thank Mr Hancock for his support, and for stepping up to help with judging.
Language Perfect World Champs 2018 Success!
The annual Language Perfect World Champs 2018 took place this year between 21-31 May. This competition is now well-established and involves language students from all over New Zealand and around the world, competing against each other to master as much vocabulary as they can in a relatively short space of time.

Our Edgewater College language students can feel very proud of their achievements! Students studying Japanese, French and Maori participated, using some class time, as well as spending many hours at home answering language questions to gain points to move up the competition rankings, while at the same time learning a lot of vocabulary in their chosen language.

Our students’ efforts resulted in Edgewater College being placed 7th out of the 73 schools competing in our category. 45 Edgewater College students gained awards as follows:
15 Credit awards – 500+ points
15 Bronze awards – 1,000+ points
8 Silver awards – 2,000+ points
3 Gold awards – 3,000+ points
1 Emerald award – 5,000+ points
3 Elite awards – 10,000+ points

Special mention must be made of the three students who gained Elite awards. This is an outstanding achievement! The three students gaining these awards are Richard Mate (Year 13 French), Christina Bang (Year 12 Japanese) and Hannah King (Year 9 Japanese).

Congratulations to all our students who participated in this competition. In an ever-expanding global economy where a knowledge of other languages and cultures is so important, it is great to see Languages enjoying so much success here at Edgewater College.
Year 13 French - visit to a “pâtisserie”
On Friday 15 June, the Year 13 French class visited Vaniyé, an authentic French Parisian style “pâtisserie” (cake shop), in Parnell for lunch. Sonia Haumonté and her team were very welcoming to our students, even letting them have a look behind the scenes at the kitchen where their beautiful cakes are created on two large marble benchtops. The students enjoyed the savouries, cakes and hot chocolate they tasted. They were also able to practise their French with Sonia and gain an insight into the delicate art of pâtisserie (cake-making), this being just one of the aspects of the French culture which is appreciated world-wide.
National Japanese Competition
Edgewater entered two junior teams into the National Japanese Trivia Competition held at AUT. Although neither team won, the students performed well against other schools.
Team 1: Charis Prins, Hillary Miguel, Jasmine Nummak, Carlos Chee
Team 2: Faith Caffery, Rebecca Parkinson, George Gray, Preston Tuiafiso
