Greetings Lancer Families,

Thank you all for your continued patience and support as we continue to adapt and adjust to new routines and guidelines.  We had a very successful first week of school!  We have learned a lot together on what is working well and areas that we can improve upon.  Do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions so that we are able to listen and problem solve together.

I will be sending out a weekly newsletter to our Lancer families through our School Messenger system in an effort to help keep everyone informed about upcoming events, school updates and other helpful notes.  Each newsletter will also be available on our school’s website under the heading of Lancer News.  It is important that you check and update your personalized communication settings in School Messenger in order to receive important updates as they occur via email, text and voice messages.

Feel free to reach out to me at any time via email at
scott.stasa@weschools.org as well as by phone at 440-943-2950.   You can also follow me on Twitter at: @MrStasa_WWMS.

Sincerely,

Scott Stasa, Principal

COVID-19 District Information
Thanks to our dedicated team at the Willoughby-Eastlake Board of Education office for creating our health and safety documents to keep our students safe to the best of our abilities.  I encourage all of our families to take the time to read these documents that are posted on weschools.org under the top menu heading of COVID-19 INFO.  There you will find frequently updated best practices to help guide our return to school.
Schoology Information
Schoology is our online learning platform for this school year.  Both virtual, face-to-face students and parents now have access.  Parent access codes were emailed individually by the district on Friday, September 4.

Please click HERE for directions on how students and parents can log-in to Schoology from home.

Virtual students are expected to follow their class schedules along with our school's bell schedule from 8:30 AM until 3:10 PM (or until 1:10 PM on Wednesdays only).  Virtual students do not need to attend lunch or study halls online.  A copy of our bell schedule is listed further below on this newsletter.  Regular attendance protocols are still in place and all students are expected to arrive to class on time whether in-person or virtual.

All virtual students are expected to have their cameras on while attending classes in order to experience full class participation and engage with each teacher.

If a student is too ill to attend classes online, parents/guardians must contact our attendance line at 440-283-2183 so that we can apply the appropriate attendance code.

Virtual Open House - Tuesday, September 15
Open House will be held virtually this school year from 6:30 PM until 8:00 PM on Tuesday, September 15.  Details will be coming in the very near future about how parents will be able to attend and hear from each of their child's teachers from a device at home via Google Meets by following the bell schedule below.  Be on the lookout for more specific details in next Sunday's newsletter!
Limited School Visitors
Visitors will be limited in the building due to the current pandemic.  The visitors/main entrance is located in the front of the building closest to the bike racks.  All visitors who enter the building must wear a facial covering and have their temperature taken.  Additionally, all visitors must provide a photo ID in order to sign-out their child during school hours

If dropping off any items for your child, we ask that you place them on the table located inside the first set of doors and notify a member of the office by using the buzzer intercom in order to avoid fully entering the building.
Student Drop-off & Pick-up Guidelines
Morning Student Drop-off/Walkers:
Students who are walking to or being dropped-off at school will need to report to the following locations during decent weather conditions until the 8:15 AM entry bell rings:
  • 6th grade students:  Report outside on the large pavement area nearest the staff entrance located adjacent to the flagpole.
  • 7th grade students:  Report to the exterior doors located outside the seventh grade hallway entrance.
  • 8th grade students:  Report outside the front main entrance located nearest the bike racks.
Students who will be choosing to eat breakfast at school will be permitted to enter the building at 8:05 AM.

If inclement weather or when temperatures drop below freezing (under 33°F), students will report to the following locations inside the building until the 8:15 AM entry bell:
  • 6th grade students:  Report inside to the gymnasium
  • 7th grade students:  Report inside and remain in the seventh grade hallway along the lockers
  • 8th grade students:  Report inside to the gymnasium
Afternoon Student Pick-ups:
It is extremely important that parents/guardians review the Dismissal Traffic Pattern map above to ensure the safety for our students, staff and other pedestrians.  As we anticipate more students being picked-up after school than in a typical year, it is vital that drivers adhere to posted traffic guidelines in our parking lot and driveways.  Our lanes are all one-way.  Cones placed in the parking lot are to help divert traffic to the appropriate lanes.  As pictured in the Dismissal Traffic Pattern map, cars must follow the yellow arrows and may not drive in restricted red areas as indicated.  Please keep alert of pedestrians and students walking to their parents cars.

Bus Riders:
Bus riders will be dropped-off in the back of the building at our bus loop in the mornings and will remain there under staff supervision until the 8:15 AM entry bell rings.  In the afternoon, bus riders will report to their designated classrooms in the sixth grade hallway by the 3:15 PM bell.  Each classroom has a bus number labeled outside of the doorway to indicate where to arrive.  Students will be dismissed from their bus classrooms when their bus arrives at the bus loop.

Facial Coverings Required
Facial coverings are required to be worn by all students, staff and visitors while in the building and on buses.  They must be provided by a parent/guardian.  Coverings must cover each student’s nose, mouth and fit snugly.   They may not contain images that are gory or images which may be considered distracting to the learning environment.  If unable to wear a facial covering due to a medical reason, written documentation from a healthcare professional must be submitted to the main office.
Bring A Water Bottle to School
We are encouraging all students to bring a non-glass water bottle to school to help keep hydrated.  Our fountains have all been fitted with water bottle filling stations.  Students will no longer be able to use the traditional fountain faucet and should label their bottles with their name.  No other beverages besides water will be permitted in bottles.
PowerSchool
All student class schedules are now live for viewing on the PowerSchool Portal.   We encourage all parents/guardians to update their School Messenger preferences so that weekly newsletters, email blasts, mass phone calls and text messages are sent to your correct domain.  Please be sure to log-in and view your child's grades via PowerSchool on a frequent basis.
Early Release Wednesdays

Students in all middle and high schools are released early from school each Wednesday.   Middle Schools are released at 1:10 PM.  Buses, however, do not arrive until their normal pickup times after 3:10 PM.  Bus riding students who remain in the building after the 1:10 PM dismissal are supervised by staff until buses arrive at their normal afternoon time.   Attendance will be taken each Wednesday after dismissal and parents will be notified if their child is not present.  Students who walk or have a separate ride home are not permitted to remain in the building after the 1:15 PM all-clear bell.

We are asking all parents to alert us if you are expecting your child to remain in our building from 1:10 until 3:10 PM on Wednesdays until their bus arrives at its regular time.  A form was mailed home to parents on Thursday, August 13 entitled Secondary Early Release Transportation Form.  If your child is a bus rider and you are expecting him or her to remain in the building on Wednesday afternoons each week until buses arrive, please have your child return this form to our school's office ASAP.   An extra copy of this form can be viewed/printed by clicking
HERE.

Please contact our attendance line at 440-283-2183 if you have other transportation arrangements for your child on a particular Wednesday so that our staff are notified.

Student Hallway & PE Lockers
It was recommended by the Lake County Board of Health that student lockers should not be utilized this school year due to COVID-19.   Therefore, students will be permitted to carry their school supplies in backpacks from class to class this school year or until further guidelines.

PE classes will not be utilizing lockers, as well.  Students enrolled in PE classes will not be expected to purchase a gym uniform as a result of not being able to utilize the locker rooms.   Proper athletic footwear must be worn during PE classes.  Sandals will not be permitted in PE class.

Rolling backpacks are not permitted in W-E school buildings.
Athletic Information

Please be sure to visit Willowick Middle Athletic Department’s website for the latest team schedules and other helpful information for our athletes, parents and spectators.  Please read the following information below as it pertains to spectator limitations given our current COVID-19 guidelines.

For our indoor sports, we are limiting the number of spectators to two (2) family members per participating student athlete due to the restricted size of our venue.  Families will need to keep six feet of distance between other families that are seated in our stands and must wear facial coverings.  Students are not permitted to attend indoor sporting events as spectators unless they are attending with one other adult member of their own family of a participating student athlete.  Spectators will be permitted into the building beginning at 4:15 PM.

Four our outdoor sports that take place at North High School’s Carter Stadium,  we are limiting spectators to family members only of a participating student athlete.  Families are asked to keep six feet of distance between other families that are seated in the stands and must wear facial coverings.  Students are not permitted to attend outdoor sporting events as spectators unless they are attending with members of their own family (which includes at least one adult) of a participating athlete.

We are not offering concession items for sale at this time.  Restrooms will be available.

Bell Schedules
Attendance Policy
All virtual students are expected to login to their classes via the Schoology portal at their regular class time and adhere to our daily bell schedule.  Attendance will be taken daily per Ohio's House Bill 410 Attendance Law which is still in effect for this school year.  Face-to-face students who are late to school must sign-in at our main office window and have his or her temperature taken before proceeding to class.

Parents of face-to-face and virtual students who are too ill to attend classes must contact our attendance line at 440-283-2183 so that we can apply the appropriate attendance codes.

All assignments and recorded videos for classes will be posted on Schoology.  Videos will be available for students to re-watch as many times as needed.  If you foresee an extended medical absence for your student, please contact our main office to schedule a homework request so that we may alert our staff.   Please allow at least three school days for teachers to gather and arrange absent work for any foreseeable or extended absence.  Students are permitted at least one school day to make up assignments for each day of excused absence.

Vacation requests will require a parent signature on a Vacation Request form available at our main office prior to the beginning of the absence.  Although we recommend family vacations to be scheduled during regular school breaks to avoid loss of instructional time, please be sure to contact our main office for a vacation request at least one school week prior to the absence or as soon as you are aware of the planned vacation.
