D.S. Reflections

 District Superintendent Steve Ottley

It’s Time! …to Persevere

How would you like this for a resume?
  • Imprisoned multiple times
  • Flogged too many times to remember
  • Faced death over and over
  • Received 39 lashes 5 times
  • Beaten with rods three times
  • Stoned with rocks
  • Shipwrecked three times
  • Faced robbers
  • Endured hunger and thirst
As I think about the Apostle Paul’s resume that he presents to the Church in Corinth (2 Corinthians 11:23-33), I am struck by the persevering attitude he displayed in his cruciformed life.  A life shaped by Paul’s realization of how much Christ had suffered on his behalf so that he could be transformed from the man Saul – breathing murderous threats against the followers of The Way (Acts 9:1), to the Apostle Paul – crucified with Christ (Galatians 2:20).  Amazing, the transforming power of the cross.

I’m sure there have been days when you, like me, have asked the question “why?”  Why are we going through this season of Covid-19?  Why does the world continue to seem to be turned upside down?  Why does the Church of Jesus Christ have to go through this?  Like you, I don’t know the answer to these questions.  But this I know, and it’s becoming clearer each day to me – It’s Time! … to Persevere.  This is not a time for the Church of Jesus Christ to retreat and shrink back.  This is the time for us to press forward with the mission of Christ.  It is time for the Church to throw a towel around its waist and, with a basin of water, wash the feet of those who are suffering and struggling around us.  Struggling with the pandemic and its fall out.  Struggling with whether or not it was a good decision to send their kids back to school.  Struggling with injustice.  Struggling with failed relationships.  Struggling with addictions.  Struggling with self-loathing.  It is time to persevere, Church.

And, let us not wait for “the Church” to organize an event before we make that foot washing a reality, because you are the Church – I am the Church.  God has given each of us the mandate to join Him in the ministry of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18-21).  Of course, this is best accomplished in community.  However, let us not excuse ourselves from this ministry of reconciliation by waiting for an event to be organized.  Let’s wrap the towel around our waist, fill our bucket with water, and walk out the front door of our home.  Look to the left and to the right, and across the street.  There is a great host of neighbours right around my home and yours whose feet are crusted over and dry and waiting to be washed and soothed.  A cup of coffee.  A conversation. A word of encouragement. A helping hand with a yard project.  These can open doors to join the Spirit of Christ in what He is already at work doing – Reconciliation work.

But that’s too hard.  It will take me out of my comfort zone.  Look to the Apostle Paul, who himself looked to Christ, and follow his cue in understanding that we have been crucified with Christ, therefore we no longer live.  Yes, it’s hard – but that’s part of the cruciformed life.  It is Christ who lives in us, giving us the power to accomplish that which He has not just suggested we do, but He demands it of us.

BTW – Make sure you put on your mask before you begin washing stinky feet.  It’s time! …to persevere.

UPDATE FROM THE DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR re: AGMs

Annual General Meeting of Ontario Nonprofit Corporations
Previously we had announced that local churches that are incorporated and have not been able to hold their annual meetings due to the Covid-19 state of emergency would need to hold the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of their not-for-profit corporation by 24 October, 2020. However, after consulting with Service Ontario, we are now advising that you do not need to hold these special meetings. The decision of the Board of General Superintendents, previously announced by our District Superintendent, authorising church board members to extend their tenure of service by one year, also validates those same board members to fulfill their roles as directors of the church's corporation until the next regularly scheduled annual meeting. Additionally, since local church boards are authorised to give oversight to the church's finances between annual meetings, this oversight fulfills the legal obligations of the oversight of the corporation's finances until the next regularly scheduled AGM can be held.

Summary: We are advising that you DO NOT need to hold a special AGM for your church's corporation. If you have any questions, please contact:

September 20 is Freedom Sunday, when Nazarenes and many other church denominations celebrate and support the important work of Anti-Human Trafficking. Human trafficking is modern slavery and is the fastest growing criminal activity globally, including here in Canada.

Please mark September 20 on your calendars and plan to incorporate a short presentation into your morning worship service (on-line or in person).

For the Church information kit on Anti-Human Trafficking please see www.ncmcanada.ca under Resources.

For resources from the General (Nazarene) Church on Anti-Human Trafficking, for services and/or social media advocacy, please see https://www.ncm.org/freedom-sunday

NCM Canada receives donations for Anti-Human Trafficking both overseas (the Philippines) for a home that provides a safe shelter for children rescued from cybersex trafficking and for Anti-Human Trafficking initiatives here in Canada. Donations can be made online at www.ncmcanada.ca or by sending a cheque to the national office and designating "Anti-Human Trafficking."

Thank you for caring about the victims of Human Trafficking.
