Are Stumps Good for Anything

In one corner of our back yard, sticking out of the ground is the stump of a tree we cut down several years ago. We’ve simply incorporated it into the garden. Actually, it’s covered by a wooden planter I built for Pat a couple summers ago. Stumps – They’re good for nothing, right? And they are a nuisance to get rid of. Just search YouTube for “ways to remove a tree stump.” Some of the videos are hilarious and dangerous. Don’t trying it at home or you will wreck your car.

God raised up the nation of Israel to carry out His plan to fix what was broken in Eden. Israel failed miserably and found itself decimated by the kingdoms of Assyria and Babylon. The prophet Isaiah describes the remains as a “stump.” In the midst of the destruction caused by their own disobedience, God gives Israel a great word of HOPE.
Isaiah 11:1-2 (NLT) 1 Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot—
yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root.
2 And the Spirit of the LORD will rest on him—
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
That was not only good and hope filled news for Israel, but for all of humanity.

Isaiah 11:10 (NLT) 10 In that day the heir to David’s throne
will be a banner of salvation to all the world.
The nations will rally to him,
and the land where he lives will be a glorious place.
Jesus, the HOPE – Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace is that shoot from the stump of David’s family. As you celebrate Christmas this year, be reminded that the same God who brought salvation for humanity out of a burnt-out stump, can still give beauty for ashes.

Spread Hope This Christmas

From our family to yours, have a Blessed Christmas.

Love in Christ,
Steve, Pat

ALTONA ROAD COMMUNITY
CHRIST-MISH BACKPACKS
In partnership with True North ministries, the church family at Altona Road Community Church recently assembled 30 backpacks for some of the older children of the Mishkeegogamang First Nation community.  Each backpack contained a warm hoodie, cozy socks, an Action Bible, bookmark, pencil crayons/markers, Christmas treats, and personal Christmas greetings. ARCC also sent additional candy canes for the estimated 350 children in this First Nation community.
Pastor Carrie prayed for God's blessing on the backpacks and for the children and families of Mish before the gifts were delivered to the headquarters of True North Aboriginal Partnership in Bradford.  TNAP will transport the gifts to ensure their safe delivery, and a Christian leader on the reserve who knows the needs will distribute the gifts accordingly. (Mishkegogamang is an approximately 20-hour drive from the GTA).
Many thanks to Canada Central District for generously providing funds for the backpacks and bibles, and to the Altona Road Church family for funding the remaining items.
ARCC is hoping to expand this CHRIST-MISH outreach project for Christmas 2023, and will be inviting other churches on the district to participate with them.  More information will be available in the coming months.

Local churches have the opportunity to help their pastors and associate pastors to reduce their debt through THE COMPASS INITIATIVE.

This is a Nazarene initiative to address our Canadian and US ministers’ most pressing financial difficulties. The COMPASS Initiatives utilizes:
  • Financial literacy, management, and well-being programs to equip ministers in personal and church financial matters that include the COMPASS Academy, the COMPASS Journey, the COMPASS Quest, and the COMPASS True North Retreat.
    • A Ministerial Excellence Fund (MEF) that provides grants for debt reduction and retirement savings to individual ministers who have completed the COMPASS Journey and/or the COMPASS Quest.
