D.S. Reflections

 District Superintendent Steve Ottley

The Main Thing

This is the time of year when we typically are planning for Back to Church Sunday. In fact this year, September 19th is the Sunday designated as Back to Church Sunday. It’s round up Sunday – A time when we’ve gather back after the summer break and after families have been on vacations and off at the cottage on the weekends. It’s a time when we’ve planned special events to invite our community to join us for the Fall kick off of a new year of ministry and programing.

This year it’s not quite the same, is it? We’re still reeling from 18 months of Covid-19 and all the restrictions surrounding it, and with the numbers rising once again, we’re reminded this is not over. Pastors and churches have worked towards reopening facilities for in person worship. Many of our people are still not comfortable taking the step of coming back to in person worship. We’ve come to the understanding that streaming our services even when we are back in person, will be part of the future.

Frustration, discouragement, fatigue, stress, are only some of the descriptors of what many are experiencing these days. Yet, we are called to be people of HOPE. We are called to be the bearers of the GOOD NEWS. That has not changed. I proclaim this truth and reminder, not in a vacuum. I include myself in those who experience the above emotions. But I am reminded of the Apostle Paul’s prayer for the Church in Rome.

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit Romans 15:13 (NLT)

This is my prayer for us all in these days. May we be people that overflow with confident hope, even when frustration and discouragement is rising. May the Holy Spirit infuse in us confident hope even when fatigue and stress threaten to undo us. And may that confident hope bring us back to the central mission that Jesus has call us to. May we refocus on the MAIN THING –

19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”Matthew 28:19-20 (NLT)

This is our marching order from the Risen Christ. This is the MAIN THING! We may not be able to do the Back to Church Sunday special, but Covid-19 does not exempt us from engaging the MAIN THING. Our family members still need Jesus. Our neighbours still need Jesus. Our co-workers still need Jesus.

The Holy Spirit keeps taking me back to Jesus’ high priestly prayer in John 17 where He prays,

21…that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me. John 17:21 (NLT)

I join Jesus in this prayer for us, that in a time when society is becoming more polarized than ever over hot button issues, and it threatens to seep into the Church, May it be that the Holy Spirit binds us together in LOVE. May it be that we can disagree with each other, respecting the opinions of others and yet the love of Jesus oozes from us as we display our ONENESS before the world. That oneness, Jesus says, will facilitate the mission that He has given us.

Lord, let it be so.

Acts 13:47 says, ...For this is what the Lord has commanded us. "I have made you a light for the Gentiles. that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth. We praise God, that in our life time, we have seen the Gospel message literally shared to the "ends of the earth". What a blessed time to be alive in Christ, and present in this world!  Yet, we must not rest in simply knowing this. We are a part of this great mission. We are the light and salt right where we live, and many of us are connected daily to people around the world, who we support through prayer and encouragement, and together share the Gospel through our lives. \we also have the privilege of supporting and praying for those who are taking the Gospel to other lands.

Special Prayer Requests:
- Pray for the persecuted church in Afghanistan as they face greater barriers
- Pray for those who are suffering from the earthquake in Haiti
- Pray for Cuba - in recent days, many Christians have prayed for God to have mercy  on their people, who are being hit hard by Covid 19.

Pastors and church boards, please take note of the following announcement. Our local churches are currently incorporated in Ontario under the Corporations Act. A new governing act, the Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporations Act (ONCA), will soon come into effect and will necessitate some adjustments to our Bylaws. We have three years to make this transition, but we will be in contact in the coming months to begin the process with you. For more information, please follow the links in the article below.

ONCA Proclamation Date Announced
The Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporations Act (ONCA) will be proclaimed and take effect on October 19, 2021. Regulations that were needed before the proclamation of ONCA have now been published.

Nonprofits have 3 years after proclamation to transition to the new rules.
Visit Nonprofit Law Ontario for more information about the steps you can take now to transition. You have until October 20, 2024?) to comply with ONCA.

If you want to incorporate soon, it may be better to wait until October 19, 2021. If you cannot wait till then, you may want to incorporate under the Canada Not-for-Profit Corporations Act.

Join us on Tuesday, November 16, as we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Nazarene higher education in Canada! Together with the Church of the Nazarene, we will celebrate virtually with a series of “looking back” interviews, campus memories over the years, trivia, interactive games and more. With our virtual break-out rooms, you’ll also have the opportunity to catch up with your classmates and faculty.

This milestone is a momentous occasion because it marks 100 years of learning, teaching and research—a remarkable record that continues today.
