D.S. Notes

 District Superintendent Steve Ottley

Standing Firm on the Mission – Being Flexible with the Methods
In his book “Canoeing the Mountains – Christian Leadership in Uncharted Territory,” Tod Bolsinger uses the expedition of early American explorers Lewis and Clark to speak to the need for pastors and Christian leaders to be adaptive in our leadership.  Bolsinger writes, “The culture is changing, the world is changing rapidly, and churches are facing change on an unprecedented scale.  Church and church leaders are becoming increasingly irrelevant, even marginalized… We have to learn to lead all over again.”
His warning is sobering truth.  We all experience it in our ministry context, where we live, where we work, where we go to school.  The world around us is changing and many times, if not most, we feel uncertain of our capacity to fulfill the mission we are called to.
Like Lewis and Clark, who set out in canoes to find a waterway to the Pacific Ocean but had to trade them in for horses when instead they faced the Rocky Mountains, we need to know when to retool. For the American explorers, the mission remained the same – a path to the Pacific Ocean.  For the Church, in every changing context, the mission remains the same – Making Christlike Disciples.  However, we need to find new and innovative ways to reach the particular community God has placed us in.  That takes work, it takes creativity, it takes being flexible and adaptive.
(Visit to study your community.)

I appreciate that Bolsinger doesn’t end with the reality of the challenges we face.  He continues… “But the church is also at an exciting crossroads.  We are entering a new day, new terrain and a new adventure.  We are not alone.  The Spirit of God goes before us.  The mission of Christ will not fail.  A day will come when the ‘kingdom of the world will become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign forever and ever’ (Revelation 11:15).”
And we all say, PRAISE THE LORD!

COMPASS Initiative (From Nazarene Communication Network)

Financial well-being program for pastors expands to Canada
The Church of the Nazarene has received a second grant of $1,000,000 as part of Lilly Endowment Inc.'s National Initiative to Address Economic Challenges Facing Pastoral Leaders.
The first Lilly Endowment grant established the Church of the Nazarene’s COMPASS Initiative, which was launched in June 2017, along with a Ministerial Excellence Fund (MEF), to provide direct relief to participating ministers. To date, over 125 US ministers have participated in the COMPASS Initiative programs, representing 48 U.S. districts.
The second Lilly Endowment grant will enable the COMPASS Initiative to move into Phase II and continue offering the same programs, matching grants, and learning resources in the U.S. as well as extending the initiative to our ministers and churches in Canada. The programs include:
1. The COMPASS Journey, a one-year program designed to increase financial literacy and provide up to $5,000 in matching grants to ministers for debt reduction and/or retirement readiness.
2. The COMPASS Quest, a six-month personal finance online program with a matching grant of up to $1,000.
3. True North Retreat, an intensive weekend of personal budgeting and money management for pastors and spouses.
