It's not just the trees that are shedding their leaves: Lief is also marking the turn of a new leaf with her first birthday! It’s been a busy year since we officially established ourselves, and we cannot wait for what will be a very exciting year two.

Let this change of season symbolise our first year in action:
hello October at Lief.

liefs, Margo

NEW SIGNIGNS: Elisha and Lily sprout Lief Wings.

We have recently expanded and signed two new directors, ELISHA SMITH-LEVEROCK and LILY BALDWIN. Lief’s roster is continuing to grow and now houses 10 eclectic directors. These two fearless filmmakers may differ in style, but their signings reveal our commitment to represent diverse talent. More on Lily and Elisha below!

INTRODUCING: Lily Baldwin

Former choreographer LILY BALDWIN crafts filmic narratives around her interpretation and playful presentation of body language. Compared to David Lynch, her work is both sensual and textured, capturing the weightlessness of youth and movement through dreamy performances, in which she skilfully avoids using the body as the centrepiece of her work.

"Editing, cinematography and music merge with dance to create a fully realized universe, filled with equal doses of longing, unease and wonder. Like Lynch, she understands that all of these tools are necessary to portray our complex inner lives." SHORTOFTHEWEEK

She’s well-established on the international film circuit, having premiered shorts at the SXSW and Sundance. Across documentary and shorts, Lily treats topics considerably; flirting with colour, dance and perspective in her Refinery29 PUMA 'Fenty x Rihanna' commercial; while her docu-short for Glamour Magazine, Misty Copeland, highlights the challenges that the American ballet dancer had to overcome to become the first African American Female Principal Dancer within the American Ballet Theatre in a very intelligent and moving documentary short.

She’s a multi-faceted creative using her experiences to shape her outlook and we’ve no doubt that you’ll be hooked by her beautiful vast body of work, as were we.

INTRODUCING: Elisha Smith-Leverock

Berlin-based ELISHA SMITH-LEVEROCK grew accustomed to traveling as a child because of her parents’ job. However, adapting to the world around her has lent itself to her filmmaking career too as she is able to grasp culture instinctively and can easily read people, handy for someone keen to capture the small intricacies of everyday life within film.

October will see the premiere of her first documentary, Miss Black Germany, at A Shaded View on Fashion Film (ASVOFF). It looks at the contestants of a black beauty pageant in Berlin and explores their identity within this context. Her work tackles topics like diversity, gender stereotypes and surrealism with a softness and maturity that works on-screen. Other spots for Fila and Boohoo are equally as visually engaging and demonstrate her ability to tailor her approach depending on the client in question.

THE WORK: DANNY SANGRA VOGUExSELFRIDGES
'EVERYTHING LOOKS BETTER'

Picked up by multiple creative publications, Sangra’s spot, Everything Looks Better in Eyewear, made quite the stir. And it’s not surprising given that it contains plenty of Sangra’s trademark jest.

The spot suggests that sunnies are the perfect accessory for completing mundane tasks, while promoting the new eyewear hall at luxury department store Selfridges.

What’s most impressive is just how much freedom Sangra was given on the job. Handed an empty brief, he was asked to write and direct the spot as well as provide the campaign’s stills.

And of course, his mastery over the genre of satire doesn’t disappoint.

Read David Reviews 5-star write-up or SHOTS' summary of the bizzare short for more details.
Production by Lief.

THE WORK: EVA MICHON POPSUGAR!

Who says Autumn can't be full of fun? PopSugar turns to Eva Michon and her subtle VFX wizardry to bring this season's capsule collection at Kohl's alive.

NEWS: DANNY SANGRA *MASTER OF DRY-NESS. *a masterclass.

US student magazine and online website Study Breaks took an academic and analytic dive into the surreal style of Lief director Danny Sangra, offering other scholars a glimpse into the world of the free-spirited filmmaker. The piece suggests that those craving dry humour, should work their way through this list:

1. NO F****ING AROUND IN ROOM 427
2. ELYSIAN FIELDS
3. JOHN TRAVOLTA
4. ABSURD IN PARIS

"His satirical style is novel and makes his films provocative, comedic and foreboding all at once. In oddly subtle ways, his short films reconcile the complexities of human nature and address contradictions of life that are common to everyone." STUDY BREAKS.
