THE SEPARATISM ISSUE

Dear Outsiders,

A forefather of Outsider is John Waters. The original outsider creating chaos on the inside by infiltrating their industry. A varmint activist for anti-norm creativity and unapologetic talk. This week I was fortunate to see him in the flesh (I recorded the talk, audio available here. The Q&A part is great) and he reminded me of the importance to fight this fight against device lethargy.

That’s what we’re talking this week. Read on,

GO OUTSIDE

“Refuse to isolate yourself. Separatism is for losers.”

– John Waters

Being separate means being cut off, without any capacity to use my human powers.

Hence to be separate means to be helpless, unable to grasp the world—things and people—actively;

it means that the world can invade me without my ability to react."

– Erich Fromm

THINK ABOUT THIS

To be separate is to become vulnerable. When seeking control, regimes first aim to isolate people from one another. When we are not interacting with one another, we are much easier to manipulate.

As Netflix subscriptions rise,
I am asking you to go outside.

As earpod sales increase,
I am imploring you to walk open and engaging with the world around you.

Revolt against the pull to numbing activities (hi Instagram) and freak out everyone with explosive, wild creativity.

>>> GO OUT IN THE WORLD <<<

"Horrify us with new ideas.
Outrage outdated critics.
Use technology for transgression, not lazy social living.

Make me nervous."

– John Waters

GO GO GO

Talk to strangers! Smile! Follow posters to different venues! Ask friends if they want to do something weird! Better yet, be weird!

These are the, oddly normal, radical actions we need to retain any sense of freedom.

Fight for your time and your mind space. Seek surrealism, make without reason. Find comfort in oddity and for goodness sake, do not believe “it’s okay cause everyone else is doing it.”

Break a habit this week and send a mail to tell me about it.

Until next time,

– Jess

FOR THOSE WHO CARE: Not only is Netflix a pathetic way to watch movies, it is also one of the main corporations doing everything it can to force everyone to stream content.

Soon all independent film watching will be eliminated - no dvd or bluray players will exist any longer. This is already happening. Nothing will exist that isn't being regulated, monitored, profiled, censored, streamlined. The choice of what you have access to will become a fraction of what it is at the moment. Therefore much of the rare and non-commercial cinema will just disappear.

Not only that, but it will also force people to consume more energy, when we should be learning to use less. Streaming video accounts for the biggest big chunk of the world's internet traffic. A friend of mine told me that researchers at Lancaster University had calculated how much energy Netflix consumes. Apparently streaming a two-hour high-definition film is like  preparing 60 cups of tea in an electric kettle.

DOING THINGS DIFFERENTLY

Outsider is a counter-culture punch from inside the creative industry.

Promoting real life interaction. Pro-offline.

It came into being after watching client after client come seeking 'relevance' with 'millennials' and crying inside. Seeing misconceptions on the efficacy of social media rise.

Named Outsider as, like Outsider Art, we observed that no/informal training cultivates greater instinct and disregard for 'rules' and established systems.
