Broken retail model pushes apparel suppliers to breaking point

Broken retail model pushes apparel suppliers to breaking point

It has taken Sanjeev Mahtani 30 years to build Must Garment Corporation, but just a matter of months for his lifetime's work to come crashing down. As he tries to pick up the pieces of his manufacturing business, he tells just-style why he fears for the future of apparel suppliers – and the millions of workers they employ.Mahtani is certainly not looking for sympathy. He's disheartened, disillusioned, "broken and battered" – and he's speaking out because he believes a moral line has been crossed by fashion brands and retailers in their response to the fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic...... Textiles minister plans for India's silk sector to be self-reliant in two years

The Union Government plans to make the Indian silk industry self-reliant in the coming two years, aided by measures in the recent Union Budget designed to boost the textile industry.

Union Textile Minister Smriti Zubin Irani was the speaker at the inauguration of the Karnataka Vastra Tek - Apparel & Textile Conclave, which launched on Tuesday. Irani took the occasion to praise measures taken for the Indian textile industry in the new budget and shared that the seven planned mega textile parks will aid the development of numerous textile sectors, including silk. Irani also shared that Karnataka is one of the most important regions for the silk industry.

“Under the Silk Samagra Program, the Government of India dedicated specifically over Rs 2,000 crore [$300.6 million] for the development of silk,” Irani said at the event, the Press Trust of India reported.

“I am hopeful that the industry gives the state of Karnataka ideas, proposals or initiatives that can make our country Aatmanirbhar in silk. We in the Ministry of Textiles are looking at the next two years to ensure that India is self-reliant in the space of silk....

Global fashion industry suffers adverse pandemic impact in 2020

Global fashion industry suffers adverse pandemic impact in 2020

The aggregate revenue of the leading fashion multinationals plummeted by 21.8% in the first nine months of 2020 owing to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a survey by the research office of Italian investment bank Mediobanca that was published on Wednesday.

This revenue slump is five-times worse than the 4.3% shortfall suffered in the same period by major international industrial groups. A decline caused by the lockdown measures introduced worldwide at the peak of the pandemic, which led to the closure of countless stores, to a halt in international exchange and the collapse of tourism.

In the first nine months of 2020, the fashion market in Europe lost 23.7% in revenue, while in Asia, Japan excluded, the downturn was only 10.1%... Read More

Hemp under the spotlight: Is India ready to experiment with hemp fabrics?

Hemp under the spotlight: Is India ready to experiment with hemp fabrics?

Hemp naturally has anti-bacterial and anti-odour properties besides its umpteen benefits. Hemp for decades has been used exclusively for industrial production and manufacturing purposes for ropes, paper and canvas. However, once it was realised that hemp can be used for clothing and its versatile properties were discovered, there was no looking back and the textile industry adapted the trend. Here is how the market for hemp is looking at present, especially from India’s POV.

The Indian market still has the stigma of comparing hemp with marijuana. However, hemp is an extremely durable and versatile fabric that uses 50 per cent less water as compared to cotton. In fact, there are two sides of the coin; on one side of it, there is ‘Marijuana’ that has so many medicinal uses and on the other side we have ‘Hemp’, which we can use to make more than 50,000 products. The entire hemp plant from seed to foliage can be used purposefully.

Reena Cheriyan
(AMM, 1989-91)

Mr. Mithra Dewars was one of the founding faculty members of Apparel Marketing and Merchandising at NIFT. Mithra as he was known by all, had a unique blend of industry wisdom and academic knowledge. A pioneer in bringing practical real world situations to the classroom, an industry titan In his own right, he will be sorely missed and remembered for his contributions to the industry on his own, and through the processionals he mentored.

Reena Cheriyan (AMM, 1989-91) passed away unexpectedly last year. She served a long stint at MAST Industries, and was most recently a consultant to Brandix Solutions. A thoroughly-competent and admired professional, and a wonderful human being, she was much loved, and will be sorely missed.
